Abbott Elementary is back in session.
Season 5 of the hit comedy premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 1, at 8:30 p.m. ET / 7:30 p.m. CT on ABC. Series creator, executive producer and star Quinta Brunson promised that it won't be like any other — and that starts with the introduction of a new teacher played by Shrinking's Luke Tennie.
"Anytime you bring an outside character into the picture, feathers are ruffled," Brunson told Deadline in September 2025. "And we're going to see some of that, whether it be for our characters or from our characters to them."
The Emmy-winning actress added, "We have a group of exciting characters that might make other people be like: 'What the hell is wrong with these people?' But we're excited for those moments."

The first episode of Abbott Elementary's fifth season will air on Wednesday, Oct. 1, on ABC. Any fans who miss the season premiere can stream the episode the following day on Hulu.
In addition to a new faculty member, Brunson also told Deadline that viewers can "expect to experience more relationship milestones" and "new pairings" of characters.
The actress also teased that the teachers will "tackle something really, really, really major — a big game-changer that could make or break them [with] some significant shakeups" at Willard R. Abbott Elementary School.
This time around, the show met a new challenge: filming a live episode at a Philadelphia Phillies game, set to premiere early in the season. The move was a risk, but one that paid off greatly, Brunson told Deadline.
"We went to one of the most historic games ever in baseball — we could not have accounted for that; there was no way to know it would go that well, it's what you imagine," she explained. "We were like, 'Ah, we hope we get footage of, like, at least one home run.' There were seven, and four by one player."

Like the previous season, the fifth installment of Abbott Elementary will feature 22 episodes. After the series' third season was shortened to only 14 episodes due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes, Brunson told The Wall Street Journal that she was looking forward to a fuller arc.
"I love them all like they're my children," she said of the episodes in September 2024.

On Oct. 1, ABC will release the first episode of Abbott Elementary season 5. Although it hasn't been confirmed, the network is likely to continue its previous release schedule, airing new episodes every Wednesday with breaks for holidays.
Last season, the show wrapped in April 2025 after taking two weeks off around Thanksgiving and a month off in December.
