Lauren Jauregui kept it real — and short — when she was eliminated from *Dancing With the Stars*, and now she's explaining more.

The Fifth Harmony singer/songwriter and pro partner Brandon Armstrong were eliminated on the Sept. 30 episode, following their Cha Cha to the song "Work from Home," by Jauregui's group and Ty Dolla Sign. When host Julianne Hough asked her how she was feeling, Jauregui answered with one word: "pissed."

"There's a lot of pressure that happens when you're in front of millions of people and feeling something really vulnerable and then have a mic shoved into your face and asked how you feel," Jauregui told PEOPLE in a new interview. "And If I'm thinking it, I'm going to say it."

But she managed to keep some emotions inside.**

"In my mind I was like, 'Oh my God, I'm so upset. I'm so sad. This isn't supposed to happen,'" she said. "[That] was just what my brain was telling me, and then the only word that came out of my mouth was 'pissed,' which is an interesting one."**

She also told Armstrong, who laughed at her response, that she was grateful to have had him as a partner. They were the third couple of the season to leave the competition.

But Jauregui noted that some good had come from her appearance on the ABC reality competition. In addition to working with Armstrong, she had the opportunity to focus on dancing rather than dancing and singing, as she usually does.

"I was able to give my 110 percent to just the dancing," she said. "That was really fun to do, honestly. Even though I was a little nervous sometimes, it was really fun to get out of my comfort zone."

After all, she said, "Dance is my first love."

Jauregui, 29, was one of the original members of the girl group, after she, Ally Brooke, Camila Cabello, Dinah Jane, and Normani Kordei, were put together on *The X Factor* in 2012.**

The "Worth It" group announced a hiatus in 2018, but they surprised audiences at a Jonas Brothers concert in September when they reunited for their first time on stage together in seven years.**

Jauregui also released a new solo song, "Ego," earlier this month.
