Sean "Diddy" Combs will return to court Friday to be sentenced, after the jury in his federal sex-crimes trial handed down a split verdict in July, following a case that captured the nation's attention.

After being acquitted on the most serious charges − racketeering and sex trafficking − Combs, 55, will await a judge's ruling on Oct. 3 regarding how long he will remain behind bars for his conviction on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution.

Combs' legal team previously filed a motion asking Judge Arun Subramanian to either overturn his criminal conviction or grant him a new trial. The court denied both motions in an opinion filed Tuesday, Sept. 30, according to court documents obtained by USA TODAY.

Here's everything you heading into the sentencing.

When is Diddy's sentencing date?

He is set for sentencing on Friday, Oct. 3.

On July 2, the embattled music mogul was acquitted of his most serious racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges – and convicted of the lesser counts of the transportation to engage in prostitution charge.

Could Diddy go to prison?

Combs could face significant prison time. He was convicted on two counts of the charge of transportation to engage in prostitution, each of which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years, totaling 20 years in prison.

However, Combs' team has recommended that Subramanian hand down 14 months of prison time, while the prosecution is seeking at least an 11-year sentence.

How long has Diddy been in jail?

The music mogul is currently in custody at Brooklyn's Metropolitan Detention Center, where he has been held since his arrest in September 2024.

What was Diddy charged with?

Combs, who has long maintained his innocence, previously pleaded not guilty to all charges, which included two counts of sex trafficking, two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution and one count of racketeering for leading what prosecutors alleged was a criminal organization.

The jury acquitted him on the racketeering and sex-trafficking charges, which both would have carried heavy prison time.

Will Diddy speak in court?

Combs is set to appear in court Friday, and his lawyers indicated he intends to "allocute," or make a formal statement in front of the court, "in the most dignified and respectful fashion possible," according to court documents submitted last week.

Combs' team also requested permission for him to "receive non-prison clothing" to wear for his sentencing, including "one button down shirt, one pair of pants, one sweater, and one pair of shoes without laces to wear to court."

Ahead of the sentencing, both his supporters and alleged victims have also made their voices heard, sending letters to the judge.

Ex-girlfriend Casandra "Cassie" Ventura Fine, who testified for four days straight in Combs' trial while nine months pregnant, revealed in her letter she is "so scared" that if Combs "walks free," his "first actions will be swift retribution toward me and others who spoke up about his abuse at trial," given her harrowing testimony on their relationship. Other key witnesses, including ex-assistants Capricorn Clark and "Mia," also urged the judge to exercise caution.

Combs' supporters have been equally vocal. Earlier this month, several of the rapper's loved ones and colleagues, including City Girls emcee Yung Miami and producer Dallas Austin, wrote letters of support to Subramanian requesting "leniency" for the hip-hop mogul's sentence.

Diddy trial revelations included allegations of abuse, drugs

Combs, known through his career as "Diddy," "P. Diddy" or "Puff Daddy," was a fixture in the entertainment industry for decades. A rapper, record producer and all-around mogul, his personal brand rose alongside him, making the Bad Boy founder synonymous with wealth, excess and success.

His arrest and subsequent trial blew it over like a house of cards, though, tarnishing Combs' reputation with claims of domestic abuse, intimidation and rampant drug use.

The two-month trial, which took place in Combs' hometown of New York, revealed startling and far-reaching allegations of physical, sexual and psychological abuse. It name-checked countless celebrities and brought Ventura Fine – Combs' most recent public, longterm partner – to the stand to detail alleged bruises covered up by makeup and premieres and a sex life allegedly fueled by IVs, violence and voyeurism.

Among the trial's biggest revelations were an alleged overdose that sent Combs to the hospital, accusations of a car-bombing that left Kid Cudi's vehicle in flames, and the details of the major payout Ventura Fine received for her settlement with the music mogul in 2023.
