After Congress failed to reach a funding agreement, the United States government shut down at midnight on Oct. 1, with seemingly no end in sight.
The shutdown is the 15th since 1981, with Republicans and Democrats blaming each other for failing to reach a deal in time.
Looming over the funding fight is also the threat of mass layoffs, with both President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance saying that "vast numbers" of federal workers could be terminated during the shutdown.
With the shutdown underway, photos captured the scene as closures hit some federal offices and national landmarks, like the Washington Monument.
