The newest episode of Amy Poehler's podcast Good Hang welcomed Kristen Wiig, who once wigged out when she witnessed a comedy legend in her midst.

The SNL alums were talking about Wiig's Apple TV + series Palm Royale, which will have its season 2 premiere in about a month and a half. It boasts a heavy-duty cast that includes Ricky Martin, Laura Dern, Josh Lucas, and Allison Janney, but the most remarkable name on the call sheet for many is the now 92-year-old television icon Carol Burnett.

Burnett, whose sketch comedy behemoth The Carol Burnett Show ran for 11 seasons on CBS beginning in 1967, and who also appeared in movies like The Front Page, The Four Seasons, and Annie, plays Wiig's nearly dead aunt-in-law in the gold-digging, Florida-based comedy. (Though the first season does end in a wild twist that involves Burnett's character.)

"[There's] so many things I could say about Carol," Wiig gushed to Poehler, before laying into a confession. "When I met her, I just fully cried."

She continued, "I was not expecting it... Except for when my kids were born and I saw them and I cried, I can't remember a time when I just, I didn't think I was gonna cry, and then it just, like, burst out of my eyes. I wasn't expecting it."

Luckily the dam-burst of emotion did not scare the seven-time Emmy winner, who also has a Tony, a Grammy, seven Golden Globes, the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor, two Peabodys, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom. (Apologies if we left a few things out.)

"I watched her as a kid," Wiig said. "[She's] so important to us, and the fact that she just did it as a woman, during that time, and so many people said no."

It may not surprise you that Poehler is also a tremendous fan, and, like many, loves seeing the two performers appear on the same show.

Despite Burnett's advanced age, Palm Royale isn't the only current show she's involved in. She appeared on an episode of Hacks earlier this year, though she was playing a fictionalized version of herself.

Weirdly, part of the magic of The Carol Burnett Show was how frequently she and her castmates would violate the primary rule of show business — they would break character. No show before or since ever celebrated mess-ups as warmly as this one. So much so that the official Carol Burnett Show YouTube channel has several 15-minute salutes of Burnett, Harvey Korman, Tim Conway, Vicki Lawrence, and others busting up and ruining the bit. If you have some time to kill, this is well worth checking out.
