James Van Der Beek is spending some quality time with his dad.

On Thursday, Oct. 16, the actor's wife, Kimberly, shared a sweet photo of James, 48, and his father, basking in a sunset as they embraced one another at home. "Happy day 🌷," Kimberly captioned the photo. It was not stated when the photo was taken.

Several users commented on James' appearance. The actor was diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer last year, and in late September, made a rare virtual appearance at a Dawson's Creek reunion charity in benefit of F Cancer in honor of Van Der Beek.

"James is looking great. Must be all the healing energy the world has been sending him. 💛," one user wrote. Another added, "He's looks really great! Wishing you guys all the best."

James has been open about his relationship with his father and the support his dad has given him since his diagnosis. In January, James celebrated his dad's birthday and penned a heartfelt message to him on Instagram.

"The way you have shown up when I've been down and out this year – without us having to ask, without the expectation of even a thank you… has been not just life-saving, but life affirming," he wrote on Instagram.

He shared that his father moved to their family's ranch to be there when James is away for treatment. During his stays he helps Kimberly out with the couple's six children. James and Kimberly share daughters, Olivia, 15, Annabel, 11, Emilia, 9, Gwendolyn, 7, and sons Joshua, 13, and Jeremiah, 4.

James shared that his father helps make lunches, drives the kids and takes care of the dogs and chickens.

He continued, "I'm blown away by how you've been there for me emotionally as I've moved through everything cancer brings up…"

"I know it's outside your comfort zone, but especially since Mom died, you have come through for me again and again and again in ways that I didn't even know how much I needed," James wrote.

"Watching you evolve, seeing what kind of man and father you are… gives me more confidence in myself than I could ever express. I feel so proud and lucky to have come from you," he added. "Thank you for being the best. Ever. Period."

Since celebrating his father, James has shared that his cancer journey can feel like a full-time job. During a July appearance on Today, he said diagnosis and treatment have "been a journey."

"There are just so many ups and downs and so many unknowns. Cancer is – I call it a full-time job." He explained that he has made several lifestyle changes, including practicing yoga, stretching regularly and adopting a keto diet. He also said that he's found "the beauty of just taking things a little bit more slowly and prioritizing rest and really allowing that to be the job."

"I'm just on the journey," he added. "It's a process. It'll probably be a process for the rest of my life."
