Australian actor Ben Lewis has died of bowel cancer at 46

His death was confirmed on Monday, Oct. 6 by his friend Todd Woodbridge, an Australian TV host

Lewis appeared in a number of productions across Australia and the U.K., and most notably played the lead role inThe Phantom of the Opera in London's West End production from 2017 to 2018

West End actor Ben Lewis, known for starring in The Phantom of the Opera, has died of bowel cancer. He was 46.

Lewis's death was announced on Instagram on Monday, Oct. 6 by his friend and Australian TV host Todd Woodbridge, who described Lewis as "one of the greats."

"Ben was a star on stage as Phantom...in Phantom of the Opera on the West End," Woodbridge wrote. "More importantly he was one of the great humans, funny caring, and a wonderful mentor to all of the people he work[ed] with."

Woodbridge and Lewis shared "so many fond memories of holidays together in Scotland, visiting the dressing rooms of Her Majesty's Theatre in London, to times spent at Wimbledon," Woodbridge continued.

The TV host concluded his post by saying that he was "sending our love to all the family tonight."

Lewis was diagnosed with bowel cancer in February 2024, and the disease was deemed incurable, per a GoFundMe account established to benefit Lewis's family.

Lewis was born into a family of classically-trained opera singers from London, Deadline reports. His parents were singers Michael Lewis and Patricia Price, and he studied vocal performance at London's Royal College of Music and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. In the 2000s, Lewis appeared on stage in Sydney in Urinetown, A Little Night Music, and Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.

In 2011, Lewis starred in the original Australian production of Love Never Dies, Andrew Lloyd Webber's sequel to The Phantom of the Opera. In 2017 and 2018, Lewis reprised the role of the titular character in The Phantom of the Opera on London's West End.

In 2012, Lewis received the Judith Johnson Award for Best Actor in Leading Role in a Musical at the 2012 Sydney Theatre Awards for his performance in Love Never Dies, per Playbill. The production was filmed by Universal for wide release, according to the outlet.

Lewis is survived by his wife, Australian actress Melle Stewart, and his extended family.
