With the latest installment in the heart-stopping emergency response franchise 9-1-1's massive, three-part premiere coming to an end with next week's episode, fans are surely wondering if 9-1-1: Nashville will really kill off its main character right at the start?

In a preview for next week's episode, Chris O'Donnell's character, Firehouse Captain Don Hart, seems to be hanging on by a thread while his wife sits vigil at his hospital bedside.

While his sons appear to do their best to keep the firehouse functional in his absence, his spouse, played by Grey's Anatomy alum Jessica Capshaw, watches over him, at one point in the preview begging, "Do not take my husband from me," while he lays unconscious with a nasal cannula secured in his nostrils and EKG wires poking out from underneath his hospital gown, monitors beeping in the background.

What happened to Captain Don Hart?

Toward the end of 9-1-1: Nashville's second episode, after pulling off a series of heroic rescues throughout a tornado-ravaged town, the firefighter was struck by lightning, with the electricity passing through his body, including through his heart.

As his clothes were torn away from his chest while he was rushed into the emergency room, purple-red bruising from the shock decorated his torso, and his sons were left staring after him in shock as medical personnel forbade them from following.

Will the Captain pull through?

Naturally, fans are worried the series from Ryan Murphy will "pull another Bobby on us" by killing off its main character.

After the death of 9-1-1's Captain Nash, little would likely surprise viewers, although it seems unlikely that the series would so heavily promote O'Donnell's involvement to immediately write him off, especially after the backlash the original series faced when Peter Krause was unexpectedly canned after eight seasons.

As one frustrated fan put it online, "they're trying to reheat the 911 nachos but the chips are stale and the cheese is rancid."

For now, all we can do is sit tight and see how things pan out next Thursday, but we're holding out hope the proverbial universe cuts poor Ryan a break. After learning about his secret brother, getting served divorce papers at work, and performing CPR on his own father in a matter of two episodes, you have to imagine that there's not much more a guy can take.
