Wind River follows an investigation into the tragic death of a young Indigenous woman, Natalie.

The 2017 film was written by Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan and stars Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen.

A sequel, Wind River: The Next Chapter, has already been filmed.

Taylor Sheridan has made a name for himself with gritty, character-driven stories rooted in the American West. You might know him as the co-creator of Yellowstone and several other hit series — including 1883, 1923, and Mayor of Kingstown — but he began his writing career in film, even scoring an Academy Award nomination for his script to 2016's Hell or High Water.

In 2017, he collaborated with future Mayor of Kingstown star Jeremy Renner on Wind River, a tense thriller set on the Wind River Indian Reservation in Wyoming.

Renner stars as U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent Cory Lambert, who teams up with FBI special agent Jane Banner (Elizabeth Olsen) to investigate the murder of a young Indigenous woman named Natalie.

Below, we're breaking down Wind River's haunting ending, including what really happened to Natalie and what we know about its upcoming sequel.

What is Wind River about?

Set during a harsh Wyoming winter, Wind River opens on the remote Wind River Indian Reservation, where Lambert (Renner) makes a grim discovery: the frozen body of 18-year-old Natalie Hanson (future Yellowstone star Kelsey Asbille), a member of the Northern Arapaho tribe.

Lambert alerts the authorities, prompting the arrival of FBI agent Banner (Olsen), who quickly rules it a homicide.

As Banner begins piecing together the circumstances around Natalie's death, she visits the Hanson family. There, Natalie's father, Martin (Gil Birmingham), reveals that his daughter had recently started seeing someone new, though he never learned the young man's name.

Natalie's autopsy reveals signs of rape and blunt force trauma, but it's Lambert who correctly deduces the official cause of death: pulmonary hemorrhage from inhaling the freezing air while fleeing through the snow.

Despite the clear signs of foul play, the medical examiner (Eric Lange) refuses to classify the death as a homicide, which prevents Banner from getting backup from the FBI.

Undeterred, Banner continues the investigation with help from tribal police chief Ben Shoyo (Graham Greene) and Lambert. Lambert's determination is fueled by the unsolved death of his own daughter, Emily, under similar circumstances.

Their search leads them to Natalie's brother, Chip (Martin Sensmeier), who initially stays silent but eventually gives up the name of her boyfriend, Matt Rayburn (Jon Bernthal), a security guard at a nearby oil drilling site.

Before learning Matt's identity, however, Lambert and Banner had already stumbled upon his naked, mutilated body in the snow.

Later, Banner, Shoyo, and a group of officers head to the remote oil drilling site where Matt worked. There, they're met by the head of security, Curtis (Hugh Dillon), along with several guards. From the start, their behavior raises red flags. Not only do they claim Matt left days ago after a dispute with Natalie, but one guard even mentions Natalie's body being found.

Banner immediately points out that Natalie's identity hasn't been released to the public, and that's when things start to get worse. Before we see what happens next, though, a flashback reveals the events leading up to Natalie's death.

Matt's coworkers, under the influence, barged into his trailer while he and Natalie were together. A confrontation broke out, escalating into brutality. One of the guards, Pete (James Jordan), sexually assaults Natalie, and the rest beat Matt to death. Amid the violence, Natalie manages to escape and makes a desperate attempt to reach her brother's home.

Back in the present, Lambert tracks footprints in the snow from Matt's body back to the drilling site.

As Banner and the team move on Pete's trailer, Pete fires a shotgun through the door, wounding Banner and triggering a shootout that kills Shoyo and other officers.

As the remaining guards prepare to finish off a wounded Banner, Lambert intervenes from a distance, taking out several of them with his rifle. Pete escapes into the wilderness, but Lambert catches and restrains him.

Lambert brings Pete to Gannett Peak, high in the mountains. There, Pete confesses to his role in the savagery that led to Natalie and Matt's deaths.

Showing no sympathy, Lambert removes Pete's restraints and tells him to run for his life in the snow, just as Natalie did. Pete attempts to flee but quickly dies due to the subzero air.

In the aftermath, Lambert visits Banner in the hospital, commending her courage. He later meets up with Martin, and they sit in silence, united in grief over the loss of their daughters.

The film closes with a stark title card: "While missing person statistics are compiled for every other demographic, none exist for Native American women. No one knows how many are missing."

Is Wind River based on a true story?

The film opens with a title card that reads, "Inspired by actual events." In a 2017 interview with NPR's Scott Simon, Sheridan explained that he was motivated to write Wind River after learning about the staggering number of Indigenous women who have gone missing or been victims of violent crimes.

"It's based on thousands of actual stories just like it," he said. "This issue with sexual assault against women on the reservation — I mean, it's existed since the inception of a reservation system. But, really, in the past 15, 20 years, it's exploded. And it gets no attention, which is the motivation for writing the film."

Will there be a Wind River sequel?

In November 2022, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Kari Skogland (The Falcon and the Winter Soldier) had signed on to direct a sequel to Wind River. The sequel, Wind River: The Next Chapter, is said to shift focus to Natalie's brother, Chip Hanson (Sensmeier).

According to the synopsis, "Terror escalates on the Wind River reservation as a series of ritualistic murders remain unsolved. The FBI enlists Hanson, a newly minted tracker for the U.S. Fish & Game, who becomes embroiled in a desperate and dangerous fight between the authorities, a vigilante, and the Reservation he calls home."

Birmingham also returns as Martin Hanson, joining a new ensemble cast that includes Jason Clarke, Scott Eastwood, and Kali Reis, among other notable names.

Wind River: The Next Chapter reportedly completed filming in 2023, but a release date has not yet been announced. In a January 2025 interview with ScreenRant, Reis admitted she's still waiting for updates herself. "You know just as much as I do, unfortunately," she said. "I am really excited about Wind River 2, as well. So just keep your eye out for it, and I can't wait to share it with the world."
