ABC has ordered "RJ Decker" (working title), based on the Carl Hiaasen novel "Double Whammy," to series for the 2025-2026 season.
The show was originally ordered to pilot at the broadcaster back in May, with Scott Speedman joining in the lead role in June. The show also stars Kevin Rankin as Aloysius "Wish" Aiken, Adelaide Clemens as Catherine Delacroix, and Bevin Bru as Melody "Mel" Romero. Weruche Opia had been cast in the role of Shay Bennett for the pilot, but the role will now be recast.

The official logline for the show states:
"RJ Decker (Speedman) is a disgraced newspaper photographer and ex-con who starts over as a private investigator in the colorful-if-crime-filled world of South Florida. The series follows him tackle cases that range from slightly odd to outright bizarre with the help of his journalist ex, her police detective wife, and a shadowy new benefactor, a woman from his past who could be his greatest ally… or his one-way ticket back to prison."
Rob Doherty adapted the book for the screen and executive produces along with Hiaasen, Carl Beverly, and Sarah Timberman. Paul McGuigan directed the pilot and executive produces. Speedman is a producer in addition to starring. 20th Television is the studio.
This marks the latest attempt to adapt a Hiaasen novel for television in recent years. Apple TV+ currently has the series "Bad Monkey" starring Vince Vaughn from Bill Lawrence, based on Hiaasen's novel of the same name. That show is currently prepping its second season. Variety exclusively reported in March that Lawrence is also developing Hiaasen's novel "Skinny Dip" at HBO Max with Adam Horowitz and Edward Kitsis.
ABC has pared back scripted programming heading into this broadcast season, with only six scripted shows on the fall schedule — "High Potential," "9-1-1," new series "9-1-1: Nashville," "Grey's Anatomy," "Abbott Elementary," and "Shifting Gears." Fellow dramas "Will Trent" and "The Rookie" are expected to debut at midseason, along with the reboot of "Scrubs."
