In this week's issue of PEOPLE, a source says "the writing was on the wall" once the country singer moved into "his own place"
Keith Urban and Nicole Kidman have been living separate lives.
"Their lives were moving in different directions, and once he quietly set up his own place, it felt like the writing was on the wall," a source tells PEOPLE of Urban moving out.
On Monday, Sept. 29, PEOPLE confirmed that the Oscar-winning actress, 58, and the Grammy-winning country star, 57, have separated.
"It really hasn't been a secret in their circles that Keith and Nicole have been living separately for a while now," the source adds. "People close to Keith felt like the split was kind of inevitable."

While Urban's decision to move out marked a turning point, Kidman has been making efforts to salvage the relationship, another insider previously told PEOPLE.
"She didn't want this," the insider told PEOPLE on Sept. 29. "She has been fighting to save the marriage."

Amid the separation, the insider adds, "Nicole's sister [Antonia] has been a rock, and the entire Kidman family has come together to support one another."
Reps for Kidman and Urban have not responded to PEOPLE's request for comment.
The longtime couple married in June of 2006 and share daughters Sunday Rose, 17, and Faith Margaret, 14. (Kidman is also mom to daughter Bella, 32, and son Connor, 30, from her first marriage to Tom Cruise.)
Kidman and Urban were last spotted out and about together more than three months before the separation was made public when they attended the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup match between Los Angeles Football Club and Esperance de Tunis at GEODIS Park together on June 20 in Nashville.

Kidman and Urban attended the sports event just five days before their 19th wedding anniversary. On June 25, Kidman shared a photo of herself cuddled up to Urban on Instagram to commemorate their wedding anniversary. "Happy Anniversary Baby ❤️ @KeithUrban," she wrote.
Kidman, who recently wrapped filming Practical Magic 2 in London, posted "summer memories" on Instagram Aug. 19, sharing photos of time spent with her daughters and extended family. Urban, meanwhile, has been on tour, with his next stop scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 2, in Hershey, Pa.

In August, a source close to the family told PEOPLE Kidman and her daughters with Urban had been "inseparable" over the summer months: "While Keith has been away on tour all summer, Nicole and her daughters have been inseparable, spending time together bonding," the insider said on Aug. 19. "Now the focus is back to school in Nashville, where Nic has been getting the girls ready for the new year."
