<p>How much money do you need to be considered middle class? It might take more money than you think to reach this income tier. The Pew Research Center defines the middle class, or middle-income households, as those with incomes that are two-thirds to double the U.S. median household income.</p>

<p>Methodology: For this study, GOBankingRates analyzed each US state using the U.S. Census's 2023 5-year American Community Survey to find the household income needed to qualify as middle class. Using the definition of middle class from Pew Research which states that middle class income is two-thirds to double the median household income, the median income was used to calculated the minimum and maximum household income to qualify as middle class. All data was collected on and is up to date as of May 30, 2025.</p>
