It's the moment Blue Bloods fans have been waiting for—the return of Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) and a few other familiar faces popping in and out in the series premiere of Boston Blue. We get a peek at where the Reagan family is about a year after the Blue Bloods series finale. And as much as things have changed, they've also stayed the same.
Since it's the pilot episode, we're also getting introduced to a lot of new faces, namely the Silvers, Boston's most prominent police family. The family matriarch, Mae Silver (Gloria Reuben), just so happens to be the city's District Attorney. So there's a lot of politics at play here, just as they are back in New York with the Reagans.

The series opens with Sean Reagan (Mika Amonsen), now a member of the Boston P.D., out on the town with fellow rookie Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner). Jonah is the youngest member of the Silver family, and the son of D.A. Mae Silver. However, the rookies' fun is cut short when Jonah spots an office building on fire and the two race to provide assistance. When they try to help, Sean sees a woman who has been killed by a gunshot, left to burn in the blaze. As Sean and Jonah try to get as many people outside as possible, Sean finds himself in an explosive zone which lands him in the hospital.
Cut to Danny, back in New York with his NYPD partner and now love interest Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), getting a late-night call that Sean is in the hospital unconscious. Blue Bloods fans will recall that series ending with Danny finally inviting Maria on a date (or at least that's what we all presumed, but the real offer was to go for a pizza), so it's exciting to see that relationship has progressed.
With Sean in the hospital, Danny races to Boston to be by his side.

What caused the fire in the premiere episode of Boston Blue?
That's exactly what Danny Reagan aims to find out when he hits the ground running in Boston. Naturally his first stop is to check in on Sean, who is still unconscious, at the hospital. While there Jonah pays a visit and introduces himself to Danny, who then asks Jonah where the fire occurred. From there, it's game on for the New York City detective who is on a mission to find out who is behind this devastating fire that deeply injured his son.
In a press conference, Mae announces that the shooting victim involved in the fire is Andrea Decker, the CEO of Image Stats Inc., a facial recognition software used by the Boston P.D. There have been discrepancies with the company and their technology, alleging that they incorrectly identify people of color.
At the crime scene, Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) is trying to find answers to who would want to kill Andrea. And, yes, Lena is Mae's daughter and Jonah's older sister. I told you we were going to meet a lot of new people and start connecting the dots of this Boston family.
Outside the building where the fire took place, Danny is standing with a group of onlookers, just trying to get his bearings. He notices a man looking a little shifty, completely focused on the office where Andrea was murdered. When Danny approaches the man and flashes his shield, the man runs, with Danny chasing after him.
Lena, noticing Danny fleeing the scene, chases him and catches up just as Danny loses the suspect. It takes a minute for Danny to explain that he is, in fact, an NYPD detective and Sean's father. Lena is familiar with Sean through her younger brother Jonah, and later we find out that Sean has been to the Silver family's Shabbat dinners (more on that in just a minute).
Once all of that has been cleared up and introductions have been made, Lena lets Danny join her investigation to find out who wanted Andrea dead and started the fire to cover it up. The two find a gun in the alley where Lena caught up with Danny, and they use that as a starting point to find their killer.
The gun leads them to a man named Carlos Delgado, a P.I., who was investigating Andrea and Image Stats, Inc. Once he is crossed off the suspect list, they turn their attention elsewhere.
But, wait, how many members of the Silver family are there?
Danny is a little tripped up by this himself because it seems like everyone he meets in Boston has the last name of Silver. As previously mentioned, Mae is the matriarch of the family and the city's D.A.. Lena is her oldest daughter and Jonah is her youngest son. But also in the mix is a detective superintendent Sarah Silver (Maggie Lawson), whose father, Ben Silver, was a circuit judge and married Mae when Sarah and Lena were teens. This made Sarah the step sister of Lena. Jonah is technically Sarah's half brother and Lena's half brother, with Sarah and Jonah sharing the same biological father and Lena and Jonah sharing the same biological mother. In the pilot we learn that Ben was killed outside of a courthouse a year or so earlier.
Not to be left out, the grandfather here is Reverend Edwin Peters (Ernie Hudson), Mae's father, who heads up a Baptist church in Boston. While you'll see the Silver fam enjoying Sundays at the Reverend's church, Lena and Mae converted to Judaism when Mae married Ben. Meanwhile Sarah and Jonah were both raised in the Jewish faith, hence the weekly Shabbat dinners.
Back to the case—there's a new suspect
When they questioned Carlos Delgado, he mentioned that there were some recently fired employees of Image Stats who were particularly disgruntled when they lost their job. This leads Lena and Danny to Marquis Rollins. When they have enough evidence to move in, Marquis, who is packing a bag to seemingly get out of dodge, immediately confesses to killing Andrea. But something isn't adding up for Lena and Danny. Why would this man give himself up so quickly?
Danny visits the hospital to check in on Sean, who remains unconscious, only to find his sister Erin (Bridget Moynahan) there. She says she is sticking around to make sure Danny is ok, because she doesn't trust that he's taking care of himself while he waits for Sean to wake up. With that, both Reagans end up attending Shabbat dinner at the Silver household, this is where they get a little more backstory on the family. And they also realize how similar their families are with most being in law enforcement and hosting weekly dinners.
By the end of dinner, the detectives decide to get back to work, with Erin returning to the hospital to sit with Sean. Lena and Danny try to figure out who Marquis could be covering for, and they land on his ex-girlfriend's son Caleb Bruce, whose biological father is serving time in prison.
When they approach Marquis with their assertion that it was Caleb who committed the crimes with access to his building key card and a gun registered in his name, Marquis' hands are basically tied. He tells them where they can find Caleb and it's actually Jonah who collars the killer.
Does Sean ever wake up in the hospital?
In the last minute of the first Boston Blue episode, Sean finally begins to stir as Danny and Erin are about to have their own Sunday dinner of takeout roast beef sandwiches. Erin races to get a doctor and a relieved Danny stays by Sean's side.
