For the first time since Dan Mullen left Mississippi State for Florida, the Bulldogs will travel to Gainesville, Florida, for a matchup against the Gators.

Mississippi State will take on Florida on Saturday, Oct. 18, at 3:15 p.m. from The Swamp, but Mullen won't be on either sideline. Mullen left Mississippi State for Florida in 2018, but saw his tenure with the Gators end in 2021 after being fired following a loss to Missouri.

The Bulldogs are on their fourth full-time coach since Mullen's departure, while Mullen's replacement in Florida, Billy Napier, enters the game very much on the hot seat with a 21-23 record in three-plus seasons.

Meanwhile, Mullen is in his first year as the UNLV head coach and has led the Rebels to a 6-0 start to the season and is a potential threat as a Group of 5 contender as a College Football Playoff team. UNLV takes on Boise State at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 18 at Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho.

Here's what you about Mullen, including his coaching record:

Dan Mullen at UNLV

Mullen was hired as UNLV football coach on Dec. 12, 2024, when he replaced Barry Odom as head coach. Odom left for the vacant position with Purdue following a 10-3 record in 2024 and an overall record of 19-8 over two seasons.

The Rebels opened the season with a 38-31 win over Idaho State and have had continued success with wins over Sam Houston, UCLA, Miami (Ohio), Wyoming and Air Force, the latter of which have been Mountain West Conference games.

The 6-0 start for UNLV is the best in program history since 1974 and it's the first time in school history that it has scored 30 or more points in the first six games. The Rebels are 42nd in the nation with 442.3 yards per game.

Under Mullen's leadership, quarterback Anthony Colandrea has turned into a star with 1,403 yards, 10 touchdowns and three interceptions, while also adding 323 yards and three touchdowns rushing.

Dan Mullen at Florida

Mullen returned to Florida as head coach on Nov. 26, 2017, following a stint with the Gators as an offensive coordinator under Urban Meyer. He replaced Jim McElwain, who was fired during the 2017 season after he made unsubstantiated claims of death threats against his family and players.

In Mullen's first season leading Florida, the Gators finished 10-3, including a win over Michigan in the Peach Bowl. He followed up on his immediate success with an 11-2 record and a win over Virginia in the Orange Bowl.

Mullen's best season at Florida came during the COVID-impacted 2019 season, as the Gators began the season 8-1 with Kyle Trask putting up record-breaking numbers as quarterback. However, a thrown shoe during a loss to heavy underdog LSU resulted in a Gators' loss and was followed up by a loss in the SEC Championship Game and an embarrassing loss to Oklahoma in the Cotton Bowl.

The following season, Florida started the season 3-1, including a close loss to Alabama. However, the Gators went 2-5 over the next seven games, including scraping by with a 70-52 win over Samford. Following a loss to Missouri on Nov. 21, Mullen was fired and finished with a 34-15 record with Florida, but a 2-11 record against Power 5 opponents to end his tenure.

Dan Mullen at Mississippi State

Following his stint as a national title-winning offensive coordinator under Meyer, Mullen was hired by MSU on Dec. 11, 2008. In his second season, Mullen led the Bulldogs to a 9-4 record, which included wins over Georgia, Florida, Kentucky and Ole Miss. The four losses came against top-12 opponents.

In 2014, Mississippi State reached its high-water mark as a program, receiving a No. 1 ranking in the polls following wins over No. 8 LSU, No. 6 Texas A&M and No. 2 Auburn. The Bulldogs began the season 9-0, but losses to No. 5 Alabama and No. 19 Ole Miss ended the hopes of a national championship.

MSU finished the 2014 season with a 10-2 record, only the third 10-win season in program history. The Bulldogs lost 49-34 to Georgia Tech in the school's third-ever appearance in the Orange Bowl.

Dan Mullen age

Mullen was born on April 27, 1972, in Drexel Hill, Pennsylvania. He is 53 years old.
