Jon Stewart hosts 'The Daily Show' on Sept. 22

Jon Stewart congratulated his audience Monday night for their part in getting fellow late-night talk show host Jimmy Kimmel back on TV.

"I want to say this seriously," Stewart said Monday while hosting The Daily Show. "That campaign that you all launched, pretending you were gonna cancel Hulu, while secretly racing through four seasons of Only Murders in the Building, that really worked. Congratulations."

More seriously, he asked, "Wasn't it interesting to try and figure out all the tentacles Disney has in your daily life? It's one thing to swear off cruises, but The Avengers? Nah!"

"How is it possible," he noted, "that by getting rid of one company, I can't watch Winnie the Pooh or Monday Night Football? Or listen to early Hilary Duff?"

He even sang a bar from Duff's song "So Yesterday," but stopped, joking, "obviously, Disney is very litigious."Stewart's comments came hours after the Walt Disney Company, the corporate parent of ABC where Kimmel's show airs, announced that Jimmy Kimmel Live would return Tuesday. The show was pulled off the air last week, following comments the show's host made about the "MAGA gang" response to the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

"Last Wednesday, we made the decision to suspend production on the show to avoid further inflaming a tense situation at an emotional moment for our country," the Walt Disney Company said in a statement earlier in the day.

The statement continued, "It is a decision we made because we felt some of the comments were ill-timed and thus insensitive. We have spent the last days having thoughtful conversations with Jimmy, and after those conversations, we reached the decision to return the show on Tuesday."

Stewart and other past and present late-night hosts, including David Letterman, Jay Leno, Stephen Colbert, Bill Maher, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon, had defended Kimmel.

Before Disney made its decision to reinstate Jimmy Kimmel Live, more than 400 prominent artists, many of them current or former stars of the company's projects, had signed onto a letter from the American Civil Liberties Union that described Kimmel's suspension as "a dark moment for freedom of speech in our nation."

Signed by stars including Jamie Lee Curtis, Florence Pugh, Julia-Louis Dreyfus, Pedro Pascal, Meryl Streep, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez, the letter stated that, "Jimmy Kimmel was taken off the air after the government threatened a private company with retaliation."
