AJ Michalka recently took a walk down memory lane with Joe Jonas.

The Jonas Brothers member released his latest solo album, Music for People Who Believe in Love, in May and performed an intimate show in Los Angeles the same month with a surprise appearance from Aly & AJ to perform 2005's "No One" — many years after Joe and AJ dated as teenagers.

The performance came together one day after they ran into each other backstage at The Kelly Clarkson Show, marking the first time they'd physically crossed paths in about a decade. "It was super sweet. He met [sister Aly's son] Jack, and we hung out a little bit backstage," AJ tells PEOPLE.

Joe then sent a text asking them to perform with him at The Mint in L.A. and mentioned "No One" is his favorite song. "We were, like, 'Yes, of course.' It was a really awesome moment," she says.

AJ adds, "I think the fans were pleasantly surprised, and it had been so long that I think it was really refreshing for a lot of fans to see us back together. But he's lovely. It was a really fun night."

A lot has changed since Joe and AJ dated around their respective times on Disney Channel. Following the end of their relationship, rumors long swirled that Aly & AJ's signature hit "Potential Breakup Song" was written about Joe — but he actually inspired another song from the sister duo's Insomniatic album: "Flattery."

Nonetheless, Aly & AJ poked fun at the rumors by making a TikTok video with Joe set to "Potential Breakup Song" backstage at his show.

Reconnecting with Joe was a positive experience for AJ. "Even though, obviously, him and I were together, I think that there is a friendship there that will always be there," she says. "We were together when our music careers were just taking off, so there's a nuance that most people don't understand. That's kind of cool."

She continues of Joe, "He's a dad now. He works really hard, and he still has a really good sense of humor. And he is really kind. It was very refreshing to see that."

Aly & AJ

Aly & AJ's latest tour in support of their Silver Deliverer album kicked off Sept. 19 at The Ford in L.A., meaning they're on the road at the same time as the Jonas Brothers, who've brought out guests from JoJo to Jesse McCartney throughout their run of shows.

Would Aly & AJ consider popping up on stage with the JoBros if asked? "There's definitely a possibility," says AJ. "It's just a matter of if the stars align and we're able to make it happen with both of us being out on the road. It's tricky, but, yeah, ideally, that would be awesome."

Aly agrees: "I think it would be really fun."

Tickets for Aly & AJ's Silver Deliverer Tour are available now, and the band's new More Silver EP was released on Sept. 19.
