Pakistan Gas Explosion Building

The explosion happened when people were preparing a pre-dawn meal on the first day of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan in a residential area of Karachi, the capital of Sindh province, local police chief Rizwan Patel said. Rescuers were still removing rubble to search for any survivors trapped under the debris, he added.

The death toll was initially reported at 13 but Patel said it rose to 16 after three more bodies were pulled out from the rubble.

Pakistan's President Asif Ali Zardari expressed sorrow and condolences to the victims' families and directed authorities to ensure the best possible treatment for the injured. He also called for a swift completion of rescue operations and urged the Sindh provincial government to enforce building codes, check gas cylinder safety and conduct a thorough inquiry to help prevent similar incidents.

Most houses and apartment buildings in Karachi, like elsewhere in Pakistan, are supplied with natural gas for cooking. However, many households also rely on liquefied petroleum gas cylinders because of low natural gas pressure.

In July, agas explosion following a wedding receptionat a home in Pakistan's capital, Islamabad, killed eight people, including the bride and groom. The blast occurred as guests had gathered to celebrate the couple, authorities said.

'Love Story' is revealing just how much Carolyn Bessette Kennedy's style has endured

Grainy paparazzi shots on social media show her hailing a cab in a black slip dress. Walking the streets of New York in an oversize coat. Wearing that signature red lipstick.

Associated Press

Nearly three decades after her death at age 33, Carolyn Bessette Kennedy is back in the spotlight as one offashion'smost powerful style influencers. The newTV series "Love Story"chronicles her relationship with John F. Kennedy Jr., and many fans are watching for the clothes.

In an era dominated by conspicuous branding and obvious cosmetic enhancements, Bessette Kennedy's enduring appeal lies in what she did not do.

She had no platform, no brand partnerships, no social media presence.

"She looks so different from the people we see now on Instagram," said Ashley Traher, a 45-year-old attorney in Phoenix who grew up admiring Bessette Kennedy from afar. "I think we'll be able to date today's influencers immediately because of their makeup, clothes, even plastic surgery. But Carolyn had an effortlessness that always looks modern and cool."

Traher, who first encountered Bessette Kennedy as a teenager flipping through People magazine in rural Lamar, Colorado, dreamed of copying her understated elegance.

"Middle-aged me is still trying to emulate her," she said.

A quiet influencer

Bessette Kennedy rarely gave interviews, communicating with the outside world mostly through her clothes, says Sunita Kumar Nair, who wrote "CBK: Carolyn Bessette Kennedy: A Life in Fashion," and consulted on the show."I really got a sense that she was extremely private, and it shows because there's barely any footage of her speaking," Nair said.Yet Bessette Kennedy's influencehas proven durable. On TikTok and Instagram, accounts such as @allforcarolyn and @carolynbessettepage are devoted to chronicling her wardrobe. Although her mother-in-law,Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, was also famous for her style, "she didn't copy Jackie. She had her own voice," Nair said."And it wasn't something that she just deliberately did when she married John. And this is what I loved about Carolyn. She'd actually dressed like this almost throughout her life," she said. The couple died in a plane crash in 1999.Signature piecesYou can still buy Bessette Kennedy's exact Charles J. NEED TO KNOW

  • Usher wasn't a fan of his hit single "My Boo," when he was first introduced to the lyrics

  • In a recent podcast appearance, Adonis Shropshire confirmed it took some convincing for the track to grow on the R&B singer, who was meant to duet with Beyoncé

  • Beyoncé's packed schedule led to Alicia Keys taking it on instead, sealing the fate of the 2004 hit

One ofUsher's biggest hits almost didn't make it to release.

During a recent discussion on theStorytelling with Dominique Reneepodcast, Adonis Shropshire shared that the Grammy-winner wasn't immediately sold on his 2004 single, "My Boo."

"I got a call at midnight.Jermaine Dupri's like, 'Yo, come to the studio.' He got this beat. And he's like 'Write to this one'. It's all he had. And he already had the melody for the beginning ["There's always that..."]. He already had that. But he don't have the words," Shropshire recalls.

"We do the song. Usher comes in the studio. It's like 4:00 a.m., in the morning. We played 'My Boo.' He hates it. Hates it. He told us, whatever y'all do, don't ever play that for me again. So at 4:30 in the morning, Usher gets in the booth. I'm like, 'I've never seen nothing like this in my life.' I'm thinking, 'Do it tomorrow.' He did it right then."

As for the female vocals, Shropshire claimed, "Beyoncéwas supposed to do the girl part originally, but she was on tour. So she didn't have the time to do the vocals."

That scheduling conflict opened up the door forAlicia Keysto lend her vocals. The twist of fate turned out great for both artists, with the single spending eight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number one.

The two singers reunited and performed the song in 2024 as part ofUsher's Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show, twenty years after the successful single's release.

Beyoncé had a very impressive 2004 in her own right. The singer started the year taking home five Grammys for her debut solo album at the Grammys. She co-headlined a tour with Keys and Missy Elliott, as well as celebrating the release of Destiny's Child's last album,Destiny Fulfilled, which was followed with a world tour.

Usher and Beyoncé would also cross paths that year, when she danced while he performed "Bad Girl" on a tour stop in Puerto Rico. Four years after "My Boo," Usher and Beyoncé ended up collaborating on "Love In This Club, Pt. II"

Genealogical sites have helped solve major crimes. Police in Nancy Guthrie's case might turn to them

Authorities trying to solve the disappearance ofNancy Guthriesay they might tap DNA genealogy databases, the same step that police took to unravel a decades-old series of murders in California and the fatal stabbings of four college students in Idaho.

Savannah Guthrie Mom Missing

The strategy could be fruitful: If unidentified DNA evidence can be connected to someone — even a distant relative — in a common genealogical database, it would give investigators more information and possibly lead to a suspect in Guthrie's kidnapping in Arizona.

"It's a fantastic tool," said Ruth Ballard, a geneticist in California who specializes in DNA and has testified in hundreds of court cases. "If it's a good quality sample and they're able to get a profile, they could find a hit on that fairly quickly."

The sheriff's department in Pima County, Arizona, saidDNA collected so farin the investigation has not turned up any matches in a national criminal justice database known as CODIS, which has DNA profiles from convicted criminals and, in some states, people arrested for certain crimes.

"Investigators are currently looking into additional investigative genetic genealogy options for DNA evidence to check for matches. CODIS is one option of many databases that are available," the sheriff's department said Tuesday.

The department said Wednesday that biological evidence from Guthrie's Tucson-area home was being examined and that DNA profiles were at a lab for analysis.

Guthrie, the mother of NBC "Today" co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing from her home since Feb. 1. The FBI said gloves found about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) away appeared to match those worn by a masked suspect who was recorded on aporch camera.

Genealogical sites Ancestry, 23andMe and MyHeritage say they can be asked to comply with court orders seeking information. Another genealogical site, GEDmatch, said its policy is to ask users if they want to opt-in to allow police to look at their data. The Associated Press e-mailed the companies late Wednesday, asking if they have a role in the Guthrie investigation.

GEDmatch has been credited with helping solve the case of theso-called Golden State Killer. Police used DNA from crime scenes to find a distant relative and build a family tree that led to Joseph DeAngelo Jr. In 2020, he pleaded guilty to 13 killings and dozens of rapes in California in the 1970s and '80s.

In Idaho, DNA from a knife sheath helped point toBryan Kohbergerin the killings of four University of Idaho students in 2022. Investigators used genealogical sites to build a family tree and pulled trash from the Pennsylvania home of Kohberger's parents to make a connection. Kohberger pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison.

Ballard said the source and quality of the DNA evidence held by police can be factors when trying to find matches on genealogical sites.

"It does require a much better sample than CODIS searching does," she said.

And there can be other hurdles.

"There are a lot of unknowns when you go into these databases," Ballard said. "The databases are not equal in terms of ethnic distribution. It's comparatively easier to find a Caucasian because more have uploaded their data and there are more family trees to mine."
