In the very heart of the Confederacy in Richmond, Virginia, a group of women led by socialite Elizabeth Van Lew (Daisy Head), her mother Eliza (Mary-Louise Parker) and their former slave Mary Jane Richards (Amethyst Davis) created an extensive spy ring on behalf of the Union. The women ended up connecting to hundreds of other women in the midst of war, all of whom became undercover agents. Elizabeth would pass along notes, aid soldiers with provisions and help POWs escape.
