Cameron Diazwas spotted filming her latest movie in New York City as her return to acting continues.
On Friday, March 13, the 53-year-old star was photographed filming in the West Village for an as-yet-untitled romantic comedy movie directed by Stephen Merchant. Diaz could be seen standing outside the Olive Tree Cafe & Comedy Cellar, wearing a long black leather coat, a scarf and black lace-up boots. Her blonde hair was styled in curls.
Back in January,Deadlinereported that Diaz and Merchant, 51, would be starring in the upcoming Amazon MGM Studios rom-com, with Merchant directing off a screenplay he co-wrote with John Butler.
According to the outlet, the movie follows a workaholic Brit (Merchant) employed at an upscale New York hotel who needs a wife for appearances. He makes a deal with a struggling stand-up comedian (Diaz) who is desperate for health insurance.
The pair's fake marriage begins as a business transaction but soon turns into an unexpected romance.
Diaz returned to acting following a decade-long hiatus with a starring role oppositeJamie Foxxin the action-comedyBack in Action, which was released by Netflix in January 2025. When Diaz's casting was announced in June 2022, she celebrated in a post on Instagram, writing, "@iamjamiefoxx only you could get me back in action! I can't frickin wait it's gonna be a blast!"
In July 2025, PEOPLE confirmed that Diaz would betaking on yet another new film rolein the upcoming Netflix action-comedyBad Day, directed by Jake Szymanski. She will star as "a single mom fighting to keep one little promise to her daughter on the absolute worst day of her life," per a release.

She is also set to reprise her iconic voice role as Princess Fiona inShrek 5, currently slated for release on June 30, 2027.
Diaz stepped away from acting following her performance as Miss Hannigan in 2014'sAnnie. During the years that followed, she married husbandBenji Maddenand welcomed two children, daughterRaddixand sonCardinal.
Opening up about the decision to pause her acting career onKevin Hart's Peacock talk show,Hart to Heart,in 2021, theCharlie's Angelsstar said she started to realize around age 40 that there were "so many parts of my life ... that I wasn't touching" or "managing."
She said she also wanted to bring more simplicity to her life. "I just reallywanted to make my life manageableby me," she explained. "My routine in a day is literally what I can manage to do by myself."
During a January 2025 appearance onThe Graham Norton Show, Diaz shared that she felt grateful to be able to return to the industry, saying "that the door was even open for me after a decade was amazing."
"It is a privilege to make films, and we are all so lucky to do what we do," she continued, adding that while she "loved those 10 years for me and my family," she also thought to herself, "If I let this go away, if I don't engage again andif I don't give it chance, I am a fool."
"It might be the beginning of something, but it's here now, and I am grateful for it," she said.
