Kitty Riggs has decades of celebrating Oscar night under her belt, whether it's getting fully decked out or putting on a fun accessory

The beloved grandmother enjoyed a special moment this year when husband Dennis provided commentary on her "arrival" for the event

The couple and their granddaughter Mary Katherine tell PEOPLE what it was like to see the special moment go viral

Kitty Riggs has long enjoyed celebrating Oscar night. She explains to PEOPLE that her love of all things Hollywood came from growing up with her dad, who worked as a projectionist at their local Loews theater in Louisville.

"Every Sunday, he would go to work at about 10 a.m. and we would go with him," she tells PEOPLE. "I would sit and watch the same movie over, over, and over all day long."

Kitty was always charmed by the feeling of Old Hollywood.

"Movies were different then. They were black and white. They were bigger than life, with lights and music. They were elegant. So I have a history of of enjoying it, a love of movies."

When it came to celebrating the Oscars at home, Kitty decided years ago that it should be an immersive experience.

"It's been 15 years. I would just put on something that was fun, special, for that night. If somebody's going to walk down the red carpet, by golly, I'm gonna in my heart be there," she says with a laugh.

Her husband Dennis "would either go watch a game or go read or something. And I loved it. I actually love it now," she adds. "I still love it. It's all the fun and elegance and hoopla."

Kitty continues, "All of it is just so far away, but it's fun. And I'll bet you that are a zillion other people that go through the same thing that I I have with the love of it."

Kitty's husband, Dennis, is more than happy to "feed her lust for the movies," he shares.

"We go to Sedona, Arizona, each year during winter and they have a wonderful film festival, the Sedona Film Festival. We go to all these movies in the openings and documentaries and things like that, and then they have an Oscar night," he says.

"It's called Oscars on the Rocks because of the Red Rocks and the mountains out there. And it's fun!" Kitty adds.

"People go and they have this 100-seat theater. People come in with their boas and sparkly gowns and things and have a glass of wine and cheer. We feed Kitty's fantasy there a little bit, while we're out there," Dennis says.

This past Oscar night, the couple went viral after granddaughter Mary Katherine shared a video of a playful moment between the two.

"I had a dress on and I went and grabbed my coat and got this pretty scarf. Dennis said, 'Kitty, walk down the steps.' Then I walked down the steps and and what came out of his mouth was, so spot-on, perfect. It was perfect," she says.

In the video, Dennis can be heard using an announcer-like voice to say, "And now, ladies and gentleman, coming in from the car park is 55-year Oscar expert Kitty Riggs of Sedona, Arizona. What are you wearing Mrs. Riggs?"

"Franc," she answers seamlessly.

Dennis sent the video to Mary Katherine, who "immediately was like, 'This is perfect. I just know that if I post this, people are going to love this,' " she says.

"He loves to dress her. He's always coming home with new things to wear. I'll ask her where she got something and she's like, 'Oh, you know, Grandpa, got it for me,' and I just always thought it's so sweet," she says.

"I feel like it's so rare to see such intense and beautiful love. I've always watched them be such a perfect example of it, and I wanted to share that with everyone else, and it was received very well."

"Everyone just is so enamored by still being able to love and have fun and do fun things like this at their old decrepit age," Kitty jokes.

As someone who has played in her grandmother's closet, it's especially personal for Mary Katherine.

"Every time we would come over here, I would just go up into Grandma's closet, and we've got so many pictures and videos of me and my sister dressing up in all her dresses because they would go to these local events, and she got the most beautiful extravagant dresses," she shares.

The nod to "Franc" in their viral moment also holds a sentimental meaning to the couple: Franc is Dennis's alter ego when he does Kitty's hair, as she explains.

"I had a situation where I couldn't do my own hair. So Franc showed up," Kitty says.

"And he learned how to do her hair," Mary Katherine explains. She notes that while the cute moments between her grandparents are nothing new to her, it's been beautiful seeing how others are touched by this one.

"It was just so fun seeing so many people get to experience the joy of what it is to be with my grandparents. And I love it. I read through every comment. There was not a single negative thing said," she shares.

Kitty and Dennis were shocked to hear about their viral fame, too.

"When she told me about it, I said, 'Oh my goodness, we're 10 minutes into our 15 minutes of fame,' " Kitty says with a laugh. "Now we've got a lot of pressure on us to like each other. I'm kind of flabbergasted because I just thought everybody is like thing."

"We were just kind of playing. It's just something that we do," Dennis adds. "When the Oscars are coming, she's going to do something, and I'm gonna help her do it."
