Colombian star Kapo reveals he was "going to retire" from music after he recorded his diamond-certified hit "Ohnana"

The "ALOH ALOH" singer details how that low point was a rarity — and later inspired him to keep going

Kapo says his second studio album, out July 3, represents a "mixture of many sensations"

Kapo is here to stay.

On Thursday, July 3, the "Ohnana" singer will release his second studio album Por Si Alguien Nos Escucha (Spanish for "in case somebody hears us"). The 15-track album, for Kapo, represents a myriad of emotions he's processed through introspection — and serves as a symbol for positivity.

"It's a mixture of many sensations. It has everything. It has nostalgia, it has happiness. But at the end of the day, my hope is to inspire people," Kapo, 27, tells PEOPLE exclusively of the album. "No matter what the message of the songs is, I feel that we have been a positive phenomenon in the world, that we have arrived with love."

The 15-track album features collaborations with reggaeton heavyweights like Manuel Turizo, Yandel, Myke Towers and Feid. The album also features Rels B, Ryan Castro and Lion Fiah.

"Ohnana," which he released in June 2024 and serves as the second track on the album, is now diamond-certified. Watching its rapid success unfold was like "entering a dream," he says, especially because when he recorded it, he was on the verge of giving up on his career.

"When I made 'Ohnana' in Jamaica, I was going to retire from music because I wanted to give way to something else. I felt like I wasn't getting ahead with what I had. But I didn't realize it was a process," he says, adding that feeling defeated was a rarity for him. "It took us more than 15 years to get the first song together. All of that time helped us establish ourselves. Now, I feel like we have a foundation and a sound."

When he reflects on this period in his life, Kapo, who's from the small town of El Cabuyal in Colombia, says that "getting depressed was a luxury." (Kapo once lived in a gas station that his family operated and he would sing música popular, aka the Colombia version of Mexican corridos, for passers by. At 13, he recorded his first rap song, "Yo Tengo Un Sueño," which is Spanish for "I have a dream." Then, at 16, he sold his motorcycle to finance a music video and moved to Bogotá where he continued performing in nightclubs.)

"In the town where I come from, we have to get up early to work, so I had to motivate myself no matter what. Giving up was not an option," he says, adding that it motivated him to experiment with sounds. "And that was where we found a space... I started to enjoy it a little more and I began to feel more like my own person, to trust more in what I had."

He continues, "It made me continue believing in myself, continue feeling that I had the ability to make the world listen to me. I was certain that this song was going to be global, and we achieved it."

For as long as he can remember, Kapo had courage in his convictions. That hard work and determination is what he believes led him to working with artists he admires like Danny Ocean and JHAYCO.

"Without a doubt it was going to happen because we were working — and whoever works God helps them," he says.

Now, Kapo is making his mom, whom he calls "the representation of God on earth for me," proud (his dad wasn't in the picture growing up).

"She was supportive — even though she didn't know how I was going to be able to accomplish it, she knew I was capable," he says.

With the album release only a day away, the "ALOH ALOH" singer feels "it's going to be huge."

"I have a big responsibility and I'm going to make more music and continue releasing it. I'm going to show you much more of myself, I'm going to show you much more of what I live, of what God gives us every day," he says.
