A woman has a friend who calls her "shallow" and "materialistic" for owning a few designer dresses

That same friend recently asked to borrow one of the pieces, but she refused

The woman revealed that their mutual friends are now criticizing her, but she doesn't think the friend in question should "benefit "from her closet after belittling her for years

A woman refused to lend a designer dress to a friend who called her "shallow" for purchasing it in the first place — and she's now asking others if she made the right call.

The 26-year-old woman detailed her story on the popular "Am I the A------?" Reddit forum. In her post, she explained that she has "saved up for a few designer dresses over the years."

"Nothing outrageous," the woman said, adding, "Just a handful of nice pieces I wear to special events. I'm careful with them, and they mean a lot to me because they're things I actually worked hard for."

The woman went on to say that one of her close friends, "Lena," has always made "snide comments" about her clothes.

"Stuff like, 'I don't get how you can spend that much on fabric,' or 'I could never be that shallow,' " the original poster (OP) explained.

"I usually laugh it off, but honestly, it does get under my skin. She clearly thinks I'm materialistic, even though I've never judged her lifestyle or spending habits," she continued.

The OP then said that the friend recently "texted me out of the blue asking to borrow one of my dresses."

"No apology, no acknowledgment of the past comments, just, 'You have so many, I figured you wouldn't mind, ' " she added.

The Redditor said she "politely said no," and told the friend that she doesn't lend her designer dresses out "especially for trips" in which she won't be there.

The OP said that the friend proceeded to call her "selfish" and "dramatic," and now their mutual friends are siding with the friend, saying, "It's just a dress."

"But I can't help feeling like it's more than that," the woman said, adding, "Why should she benefit from something she's constantly belittled me for?"

The woman's fellow Reddit users were quick to tell her that her feelings on the situation are completely valid.

"NTA [not the a------]," one person said. "Just tell her you'd hate for her to catch your materialistic germs."

"NTA. Absolutely not. If designer clothes are too shallow for her, she shouldn't wear them. Tell your friends how insulting she's been about your choice to own the dresses in the first place," said someone else.

Another person suggested that the OP do some soul-searching about whether she wants a "friend" like this in her life in the first place.

"She will definitely not be replacing it or reimbursing you if she damages it, so stick to your no," they said, adding, "And consider how close of a friend she really is when she puts you down regularly [...] and apparently badmouths you to others. NTA."
