<p>The musician, 83, said he is experiencing "chronic and intense back pain" that has become "unmanageable"</p>
<p>Simon will undergo a "minor surgical procedure" in the coming days before completing his current North American tour</p>
<p>Paul Simon has canceled a pair of shows in Philadelphia this weekend as a result of "chronic and intense back pain."</p>
<p>The singer-songwriter, 83, shared a statement on Instagram on Saturday, June 28 — hours before a scheduled show at the city's Academy of Music — announcing that both remaining performances at the venue had "regretfully" been canceled due to his injury.</p>
<p>"Paul has been struggling with chronic and intense back pain," the statement read. "Today it became unmanageable and demands immediate attention. Unfortunately, we have to cancel these shows at this time, as we don't have the ability to reschedule them."</p>

<p>"However, we are hopeful after this minor surgical procedure which has been scheduled in the next few days, Paul will be able to complete the tour as well as look into returning to make up these dates," the statement continued. "In the meantime, please go to your point of purchase or local ticket provider for a full refund."</p>
<p>Both performances, scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, are now listed as canceled on the Ensemble Arts website. Patrons are encouraged to "look for a refund to your original form of purchase in the next 7 days."</p>

<p>Simon played at the venue just two days earlier on June 26, for what was set to mark the first of three scheduled Philadelphia performances on his A Quiet Celebration Tour. The run of shows is next scheduled to hit Long Beach Performing Arts Center's Terrace Theater in Long Beach, Calif., on July 7.</p>

<p>The Simon & Garfunkel icon announced the tour in February, years after announcing his retirement from touring in 2018 due to hearing loss.</p>
<p>The gigs, in support of his 2023 LP Seven Psalms, have so far featured performances in intimate venues, including Austin's Bass Concert Hall, Denver's Paramount Theatre and New York City's Beacon Theater.</p>
<p>Simon worked with Stanford Initiative to Cure Hearing Loss and his own production team to have "moving monitors to surround him" on his latest run of shows, which kicked off on April 4 at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans.</p>
<p>After returning in Long Beach, Simon is scheduled to continue the tour with stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Vancouver and Seattle, before wrapping in early August.</p>
