NEED TO KNOW

  • “If you tried to keep up with the amount of movies and TV shows and books on our larger family, that’s all your life would be about," Maria Shriver tells PEOPLE

  • She and her brothers are instead spending their energy modeling their parents' legacy of service, or — as Tim Shriver puts it — working to "kick ass and make a difference"

The Shriver family — and their extended Kennedy family — is almost always in the news, most recently with the phenomenon of the hit FX seriesLove StoryaboutJFK Jr.andCarolyn Bessette, butMaria Shriveris clear about where their personal focus lies.

“If you tried to keep up with the amount of movies and TV shows and books on our larger family, that’s all your life would be about,” says Maria. “And if we went down that road, it’d be a full time job."

Four of the five children of Sargent Shriver and Eunice Kennedy Shriver — Bobby, 71; Maria, 70; Tim, 66; and Mark, 62 — recently spoke to PEOPLE at theLyndon B. Johnson Presidential Libraryabout their family roots and the surprise discovery of their father's long lost manuscript. It's now a published memoir titledWe Called It A Warthat details how the Shriver patriarch led the War on Poverty, a sweeping set of 1960s social programs to help low income Americans.

That, the Shriver siblings say, is their focus.

“We've all worked really hard to work together to support both of our parents and their vision and continue to honor their legacy, keep it alive,” notes Maria.

Maria foundedThe Sunday Paperand theWomen’s Alzheimer's Movement. Bobby is a philanthropist and co-founder of theRED campaignwithBono. Tim is the chairman of theSpecial Olympics. Mark, ahigh school president, also founded theSave the Children Action Network, and their younger brother Anthony, 60, runsBest Buddies International.

“We all work with each other,” Maria explains. “We go to visit Mark's school. We work at Save the Children. I work at Special Olympics — Bobby's on the board, he raises a lot of the money. And if we went down that [other] road, it'd be a full-time job.”

Adds Mark, “Daddy said, 'Don't pay any attention to it. Go do your work. If you can, go to mass.' And that's where you get the results.”

“Daddy really understood that there was a larger narrative out there," Tim says. "But his job was to kick ass and make a difference. And that relentless focus on making the difference in whatever way he could, whether it produced a child who has a head start, that was what mattered. The question is, did you make a difference?"

As Maria puts it, “I think it's a really good lesson. It's noisy out there. And you can get pulled in a hundred different directions by a hundred different people and then end up in a mess yourself. Or you can stay focused. It’s a message I say to my kids.”

With 19 kids and 10 grandkids between them, the Shriver siblings are building a dynasty of good deeds all on their own. "If you give your kids something that's real, not BS, not veneer, not flash, they keep coming back," says Tim. "Our parents gave us the privilege of being involved in work that matters, so our kids, I hope will feel that."

'The Devil Wears Prada 2' puts a spotlight on Italy's fashion capital

MILAN (AP) —Pradamay have a title role in “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” which premieres in Italy’s fashion capital on Thursday, but fashion at large gets a spotlight andMilana supporting role.

Italy The Devil Wears Prada 2

The film evokes Prada without being about the storied fashion house that has become synonymous with Milan. In homage,Meryl StreepandAnna Wintourboth wear Prada on a current Vogue cover celebrating the film about a demanding fashion editor.

But when part of the movie was shot in Milan during fashion week last September, aDolce & Gabbanarunway show, not Prada, was the backdrop for a scene featuring Streep and Stanley Tucci.

‘’When you think of Prada, when you think of the Prada brand, you also think of Milan. This is obviously good for the fashion system,’’ said Tommaso Sacchi, Milan’s counselor for culture. “It’s a film that is good for the city.’’

Fans converge on film pop-up

That enthusiasm is spilling over to a pop-up at Milan’s main department store, where aficionados of the film and fashionistas have flocked to take selfies at a replica of fictitious fashion editor Miranda Priestly’s desk and against the backdrop of a faux Runway magazine mock-up cover.

VIPs attending the film's Italian premiere on Thursday, ahead of its global release next week, will attend a cocktail in the space.

The Rinascente CEO, Mariella Elia, said the response to the pop-up — which is announced by giant statues of the iconic red pumps outside the store — shows that people have “a desire for lightness.”

“It’s not just about buying, it’s really about reviving what fashion represents … a desire to have a stylish flair once again, a desire for joy, too — perhaps in contrast with the current economic and international moment that humanity is experiencing,’’ Elia said.

On a recent day, the space filled with people browsing limited edition T-shirts with famous phrases from the first film like, “Is there some reason my coffee isn’t here?”

Valentina Cattivelli, a professor, said she wasn’t trying to channel Priestly as she sat behind the replica of her desk. It included an inbox full of other lines from the original film, including Priestly's dismissive, “That’s all.’’

“No, I’m not so cruel in my daily life, but I appreciate her professional style and also her fashion and the taste for fashion. But not her sarcasm or cruelty, no,” Cattivelli said.

Where Prada meets the film

The Prada brand was founded a few steps away, in the stately Vittorio Emanuele II Gallery, by Miuccia Prada’s grandfather. The shopping arcade today is anchored by two Prada flagship stores.

Miuccia Prada transformed the brand into a fashion juggernaut, turning the infamous ugly chic aesthetic into must-have or must-emulate looks and accessories that bring intellectual heft to runway fashion — a theme of the original movie, which offered a peek beyond fashion-world frivolity.

“There is a close relationship between the ‘Devil Wears Prada’ franchise and Prada, because by evoking Prada from the very title, it evokes a fashion that makes you dream, a fashion that makes you feel elegant, a fashion that makes you feel good, a fashion that gives you an allure,’’ said Annarita Briganti, a fashion journalist who wrote a book about Prada for Rizzoli’s Made in Italy editions.

  • The late pro wrestling star says one night he found himself "sitting in front of my bathroom with a gun in my mouth and not knowing what I was doing"

  • The Netflix documentary about Hogan's life begins streaming Wednesday, April 22, and includes his final interview before his July 2025 death

In a new documentary aboutHulk Hogan, which includes the late professional wrestler’s final interview before his death last year, the longtime WWE star reveals he once considered suicide while his marriage toLinda Hoganfell apart.

Hogan, whodied from a heart attackin July 2025 at the age of 71, tells producers that he once put “a gun in my mouth” after drinking alcohol and taking pills during one distraught episode in the build up to his and Linda’s 2009 divorce.

The embattled pro wrestling icon makes the emotional revelation near the end of a new four-part Netflix documentary,Hulk Hogan: Real American, about his life and career. The documentary begins streaming Wednesday, April 22.

A large chunk of the documentary centers on Hogan’s family life, including his 26-year marriage to Linda, now 66, who he married in 1983. The couple shared two children: daughterBrooke Hogan, now 37, and sonNick Hogan, 35.

Hogan says in the documentary that his and Linda’s marriage began to fall apart around the time he pitched his family on starring inHogan Knows Best, the VH1 reality show about his family life outside the ring. The 12-time world champion explains that he hoped filming the reality show would give him and Linda something “in common” to work towards, hoping to bring them closer. However, he explains, they grew further apart — ultimately leading to a bitter and highly publicized divorce.

The pro wrestling star explains the fallout from their broken marriage left him considering suicide one night.

“I went home and I started drinking and you know started eating pills, and I just went down this rabbit hole for a couple days and the next thing I know, I'm sitting in front of my bathroom with a gun in my mouth and not knowing what I was doing,” Hogan says in the doc.

He continues: "I hit rock bottom. I gave Linda 70% of everything because I just didn’t want to ever talk to her again, be with her, I never wanted to see her again. So, I gave her everything to get rid of her and after the divorce I had no money. I was broke, and so TNA [Total Nonstop Action Wrestling] saved me.”

The longtime WWE and WCW star joined the upstart TNA pro wrestling promotion in late 2009, shortly after his and Linda’s divorce was finalized. He joined former WCW head executive and longtime friend Eric Bischoff on the program.

“He was down and he was hurting,” Bischoff says about Hogan at the time. “He was in the darkest most devastating part of his life.”

In the documentary, Hogan expresses regret for how the final 20 years of his life played out, from the decision to pitch his family on doing a reality show to a number of scandals that bruised his legacy — including a leaked 2007 sex tape and later, an audio clip of him using the N-word, which was publicized in 2015 and led to the WWE firing him and beginning to erase his records and history with the company.

When asked by Netflix producers when he was happiest, Hogan says he often thinks back to the early years of his marriage with Linda, when their kids were still young.

Linda, who is also heavily featured in the documentary, expresses her own regret for how her marriage with Hogan played out, saying she still “had love for him” even after their divorce.

“I still care about him the same, it doesn’t go away,” Linda says about her late ex-husband. “I wish things would’ve turned out differently for us. But then when he got sick, I realized that my love never faded for him. I still had love for him. I really do. I still love him.”

Iran war drives UK inflation up to 3.3% in major blow for Reeves

UK inflation rose in March, latest figures released on Wednesday have revealed, in a clear sign ofthe impactof the economy from the Iran-US war.

The Independent US

The latest data is the first from the Office for National Statistics to include elevated petrol and diesel costs since the start of the conflict. Prices have gone up as result of the closure of the Strait of Hormuz shipping corridor.

The ONS figures showed Consumer Prices Index inflation rose 3.3 per cent in the year to March, up from 3 per cent in February.

The increase marks a blow for Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who made cutting the cost of living her number one priority. Research by the Resolution Foundationhas foundthe average household will be £480 worse off this year due to increased energy costs.

In response, Ms Reeves said the Iran crisis was “not our war, but it is pushing up bills for families and businesses”.

She continued: “That’s why it’s my number one priority to keep costs down.

“Our economic plan is the right one and has put us in a stronger position to support families in the face of this new crisis.”

Pointing to measures announced before the conflict she said: “We’ve taken £117 off energy bills, frozen rail fares and protected motorists with the fuel duty freeze.

“We’re acting to protect people from unfair price rises if they occur to bring down food prices at the till, and are boosting long-term energy security — building a stronger, more secure economy.”

The rise in inflation also means the Bank of England is unlikely to cutinterest ratesany time soon. Before theIranwar, it had signalled that it might cut rates two or three times this year from the present 3.75 per cent.

That would have led to cheaper new mortgages and lower borrowing costs for businesses.

The news on inflation comes amid fears the a further escalation in the Middle East conflict could also impact government borrowing.

The influential Resolution Foundation has found that a “severe but plausible scenario”, in which the conflict intensifies and delivers the largest hits to the economy, would result in Government borrowing increasing by £16 billion a year in 2029-30.

RAC data from Thursday 16 April showed that the average price of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts was 158.1p, 25p more expensive than when the war began on February 28.

The average price of a litre of diesel sits at 191.2p, up 49p compared with the start of the war.

Economists at Oxford Economics said they expect the rise in pump prices to add between 0.2 and 0.3 percentage points to the rate of inflation in March.
