King Charles and Queen Camilla celebrated Maundy Thursday this morning at St. Asaph Cathedral, the UK's smallest ancient cathedral.

It is the first time the service—held each year on the Thursday before Easter Sunday—is in North Wales since its inception 800 years ago; Queen Elizabeth began the tradition of taking the Maundy service around the country to different churches every year. It has only been in Wales once before, in St Davids in 1982.

The first royal Maundy service was held in 1210, per theBBC, by King John. While historically, monarchs washed feet of selected individuals, today, the King presents specially minted coins to recipients. Today, the King handed out Maundy money to 77 men and 77 women, in reflection of his age.

In addition, for this year's service, Ettinger, a British leather goods company that holds aRoyal Warrant, crafted the purses.

The King and Queen Camilla played a festive role at the Royal Maundy Service, which commemorates the Christian holy day on the Thursday before Easter.

There, King Charles had the honor of presenting Royal Maundy gifts to approximately 77 men and 77 women from Wales and other dioceses across the U.K., recognizing their exemplary Christian service to their communities.

The "77" number matched the monarch's age, and recipients received two purses containing the "Maundy Money." The white purse held sets of specially minted silver Maundy coins totaling 77 pennies, reflecting his number of years, while the red purse contained a £5 coin commemorating the 100th anniversary ofQueen Elizabeth's birth (later this month) and a 50p coin celebrating the 50th anniversary of The King's Trust, one of King Charles' charities.

The church service featured specially commissioned music by Welsh composers and musicians in a celebration of a return of the Royal Maundy Service to Wales. The service also featured the processional Cross of Wales, a gift from King Charles to the Christians of Wales and cross that was used on his May 2023 coronation day. The Cross of Wales, which headed the procession for the King and Queen Camilla's crowning ceremony at Westminster Abbey almost three years ago, contains a fragment of the True Cross, a gift from the King to Pope Francis and believed to be part of the cross Jesus was crucified on.

After the service wrapped, the King and Queen joined the Royal Maundy Party for the traditional group photo outside the West Door before taking time to meet members of the cathedral community.

The Royal Maundy Service is an ancient tradition tracing back to 600 AD, honoring how Jesus washed the feet of the Apostles at the last supper. The royal family's website explains that the number of coins the monarch distributes correlates to "the number of years they have lived" and King Charles has done the honors every year of his reign, with the exclusion of 2024, shortly after it was announced that he was undergoing treatment for cancer.(The King's treatment for an undisclosed form of cancer continues, and heshared the "good news" in December 2025that his treatment would be reduced this year.)

Courtney Love Recalls Visit with 'Repulsive' Marlon Brando, Who She Thought for Years Was Her Grandfather

NEED TO KNOW

  • Love met Brando through Warren Beatty but found him "super repulsive"

  • Paula Fox, Love's biological grandmother, gave up Love's mother for adoption

Courtney Lovethought for years thatMarlon Brandomight be her grandfather — and even though she's now certain he's not, she's opening up about their unimpressive meeting.

The Hole frontwoman, 61, said on Billy Corgan'sThe Magnificent Otherspodcast on Wednesday, April 1 that she long believed the legendary actor to be her grandfather, as he'd allegedly slept with her grandma, the novelist Paula Fox.

"When I met him, I thought he was super repulsive and that tracked. I was like, 'Oh, I must be related to this guy,'" she told Corgan.

Love said she was friendly with Brando's neighborWarren Beatty, and eventually "lobbied him" to facilitate a meeting between the two.

"'I just want to meet him. I don't want anything from Marlon Brando,'" she recalled telling Beatty. "And then Warren, he said, 'Marlon wants a note from you.' So I wrote him a note. 'I don't want anything from you.'"

At one point, after giving the Oscar winner her "word" that she had no ulterior motives, she used Brando's bathroom and eyed his toothbrush, knowing she could easily swipe it and use his DNA to uncover the truth about her lineage.

"Nah. Like, nah. Maybe I'm too much of a feminist, but I was like, 'I don't need your last name.' That's how I felt," she said. "Also, I gave my word. But I'm glad I didn't because it turned out he wasn't even my grandfather, so there's the comedy there."

Love did not identify her actual grandfather, but noted he was a very tall man.

She later gave Carroll, now 81, up for adoption, and Love only learned in adulthood that Fox was her biological grandmother.

The two met just once, and the meeting was a volatile one.

"She's awful, she's awful. She's terrible!" Fox said of Love inThe Observerin 2013. "I met with her for an hour, and the hour was like an hour in the devil's pocket, for both of us… I don't want to be mean."

The singer, meanwhile, called Fox's "absolute dislike" of her "shocking and inexplicable."

Still, Love quipped to the outlet that "if you look at me before my first nose job, I kind of look like Marlon Brando."

Brando was the father of at least 11 children. He died in 2004 at 80 years old.
