Netanyahu says Iran can no longer enrich uranium, as conflict continues through Gulf

Iran intensified its attacks on oil and natural gas facilities around the Gulf on Thursday, raising the stakes in a war that is sending shock waves through the global economy.

Scripps News

The strikes, in retaliation for an Israeli attack on a key Iranian gas field, sent fuel prices soaring and risked drawing Iran's Arab neighbors directly into the conflict. Iran's targeting of energy production further stressed global supplies already under pressure because of its stranglehold on the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway through which a fifth of the world's oil is transported.

Since the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28, Iran's top leaders have been killed in airstrikes and the country's military capabilities have been severely degraded. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said late Thursday that Iran no longer has the ability to enrich uranium or make ballistic missiles.

Still, Iran — now led by the son of the supreme leader killed in the war's opening salvo — remains capable of missile and drone attacks rattling its Gulf Arab neighbors and a global economy dependent on the energy they produce.

Underscoring the danger to ships in the region, a vessel was set ablaze off the coast of the United Arab Emirates and another damaged off Qatar. Efforts to bypass the Strait of Hormuz were also under pressure: An Iranian drone hit a Saudi refinery on the Red Sea, which the country had been hoping to use as an alternative exit route.

Brent crude oil, the international standard, briefly surged above $119 a barrel, up more than 60% since Israel and the United States started the war. The European benchmark for natural gas prices also rose sharply and has roughly doubled in the past month.

Energy infrastructure is targeted around the Gulf

Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE denounced the Iranian attacks. Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit called them a "dangerous escalation."

But Iran showed no signs of backing down. Saudi Arabia said its SAMREF refinery in the Red Sea port city of Yanbu was hit. Saudi Arabia had begun pumping large volumes of oil west toward the Red Sea to avoid the Strait of Hormuz.

Qatar, a key source of natural gas for world markets, said extensive damage was caused by Iranian missiles hitting the Ras Laffan liquefied natural gas facility, where production had already been halted after earlier attacks. Damage to the facility could delay Qatar's ability to get supplies to the market even after the war ends.

Two oil refineries in Kuwait and gas operations in Abu Dhabi also were targeted by Iran, local authorities said.

In Israel, more than a half-dozen waves of Iranian attacks targeting large parts of the country sent millions of people to shelters. The strikes caused damage to buildings but no significant casualties were reported.

After the latest Iranian barrage, Israeli Energy Minister Eli Cohen said the electricity grid in northern Israel sustained some damage. He said crews had restored electricity to some areas and were working to restore it in others. Israeli media showed images of black smoke rising from an oil refinery in the northern city of Haifa; Cohen said the refinery damage was minor.

Hegseth says more Iranian leaders could be targeted

The Trump administration has cited various war objectives, including degrading Iran's missile capabilities and its nuclear program. Killing senior leaders has also been a priority for the U.S. and Israel.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth on Thursday implied that more leaders could be targeted, referring specifically to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Basij force, a powerful internal security unit whose leader was killed by Israel earlier this week.

"The last job anyone in the world wants right now, senior leader for the IRGC or Basij, temp jobs, all of them," Hegseth said.

Gen. Dan Caine, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Thursday that U.S. forces continue to attack deeper into Iranian territory, with warplanes hunting Iranian boats in the Strait of Hormuz and helicopters striking Iranian drones. Caine said the U.S. military has also dropped 5,000-pound bombs on underground weapon-storage facilities.

Iran's state TV, quoting a Revolutionary Guard statement, said the country's air defense system hit an F-35 fighter jet. U.S. Central Command said an F-35 fighter jet was forced to make an emergency landing after flying a combat mission over Iran. A spokesman for the command, Capt. Tim Hawkins, said the aircraft landed safely, the pilot was in "stable" condition and the incident was under investigation.

In a sign of the Iran war's rising price tag, the Pentagon is seeking $200 billion in additional funds, a senior administration official said. The department sent the request to the White House, according to the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss the private information.

Among the Iranian energy facilities hit in recent days was the Bushehr nuclear power plant complex. There were no injuries and the plant suffered no damage, the International Atomic Energy Agency said.

Israel said Thursday it struck Iranian targets in the Caspian Sea for the first time. Israeli military spokesman Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani said the strikes hit dozens of targets, including ships, a shipyard and a command center.

Iran's strikes were retaliation for Israeli attack on a critical gas field

Iran stepped up its attacks on Gulf energy facilities after Israel hit South Pars, the Iranian part of the world's largest gas field, which is located offshore in the Persian Gulf and owned jointly with Qatar.

With some 80% of all power generated in Iran coming from natural gas, according to the International Energy Agency, the attack directly threatens the country's electricity supplies. Natural gas is also used to supply household heating and cooking across the Islamic Republic.

"Israel's target selection in this war has heavily focused on the institutions, leaders and infrastructure," the New York-based Soufan Center said in a research note. "It now seeks to inflict additional pressure on the regime by making the living conditions for civilians intolerable."

Iran condemned the strike on South Pars, with President Masoud Pezeshkian warning of "uncontrollable consequences" that "could engulf the entire world."

In Washington, President Donald Trump said that Israel would not attack South Pars again. But he warned on social media that if Iran continued striking Qatar's energy infrastructure, the U.S. would retaliate and "massively blow up the entirety" of the field.

Asked later about the possibility of U.S. ground troops being deployed to Iran, Trump responded, "No. I'm not putting troops anywhere."

Death toll climbs in third week of war

More than 1,300 people in Iran have been killed during the war. Israeli strikes against the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militant group in Lebanon have displaced more than 1 million people — roughly 20% of the population — according to the Lebanese government, which says more than 1,000 people have been killed. Israel says it has killed more than 500 Hezbollah militants.

In Israel, 15 people have been killed by Iranian missile fire. Four people were also killed in the occupied West Bank overnight by an Iranian missile strike, according to officials.

At least 13 U.S. military members have been killed.

Iran announced the execution of three men detained in January's nationwide protests, the first such sentences known to have been carried out, the judiciary's Mizan news agency reported.

Spoilers below.

In the years before his marriage, John F. Kennedy Jr. was considered one of the most eligible bachelors of his era—if notthemost eligible bachelor. When he wed Carolyn Bessette in 1996, the pair became a source of enormous fascination: There was a sense that, together, they formed a perfect couple. That image was shattered in 1999 when the pair died in a tragic plane crash alongside Carolyn's sister Lauren.

FX's new fictionalized drama series,Love Story, recounts the couple's seven-year relationship, with Paul Anthony Kelly starring as John and Sarah Pidgeon as Carolyn. The show traces John's career in magazines and Carolyn's in fashion; their courtship; their marriage; and their eventual deaths. The supporting cast includes Naomi Watts as Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Grace Gummer as Caroline Kennedy, and Alessandro Nivola as Calvin Klein.

But what doesLove Storyget right? And what does the series leave out? Here's everything you need to know about the real-life events that inspired some ofLove Story's key moments.

John and Carolyn's First Meeting

The real story of their first encounter is less clear: Some friendsrecallthem meeting when John came to Calvin Klein for a fitting in 1992, whileothersremember them meeting at a party. As John wasdatingactressDaryl Hannahat the time, he and Carolyn didn't begin dating seriously until 1994, following the death of Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

On their first date inLove Story, Carolyn informs John how she got her job at Calvin Klein. This story is accurate to whatThe New York Timeswrote about Carolyn's real-life career trajectory in 1996.

Part of Carolyn's allure was her ability to work with celebrities. In the first episode, she impresses Calvin Klein when she skillfully styles Annette Bening for an event. It's unclear whether this exact scene really took place, butThe New York Timesreported that Bening was indeed one of the stars that Carolyn dressed while she worked for Calvin Klein.

In the first episode ofLove Story, we see John and his business partner Michael Berman (Michael Nathanson) meet with potential investors at the New York City restaurant Michael's, which was, in fact, a top spot formedia executivesat the time.

As theNew York Timesreported in 1974, John was, in fact, robbed in Central Park when he was 13.

Jackie Kennedy Onassis's Death

The episode "America's Widow" follows the Kennedy family after Jackie Kennedy Onassis is diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and eventuallydiesin 1994. The episode includes details such as Jackie receiving last rites shortly before her death, which is not something that's been reported on publicly. We do, however, watch John step outside of the building—just as he did in real life—andspeakto the crowd of reporters standing outside. "She was surrounded by her friends and her family and her books and the people and the things that she loved, and she did it in her own way," he said.

Calvin Klein's Paper Clips

In episode 4, "I Love You," we see Carolyn nervously straighten a row of black paper clips prior to Calvin Klein's arrival at the office. This detail is accurate to the real Klein—asWomenswear Dailyreported in 2004, the only paper clips the designer allowed in the office were black ones.

The Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Auction

Also in "I Love You," John and his sister, Caroline, catalogue their mother's possessions after deciding to sell some of her belongings at auction. The real-life Sotheby's sale of"The Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis"was held over four days in April 1996 and was one of the most famous auctions of all time. Among the pieces sold were President John F. Kennedy's White House rocking chair, whichwentfor $453,500, and the first lady's engagement ring from Aristotle Onassis, which waspurchasedfor $2,587,500. Caroline says the sale is necessary to cover their $34 million in inheritance taxes, which isn't quite accurate.$34 millionwas, in reality, the total amount brought in by the auction, and it's unlikely the tax bill and the proceeds were both exactly $34 million.

Jackie's Swimming Ring (and Carolyn's Engagement Ring)

When Caroline and John are going through their mother's things in episode 4, she points out what she calls Jackie's "swimming ring." The idea, Caroline explains, was that she switched to wearing this ring when she went swimming to avoid losing her wedding and engagement rings. At the end of the episode John looks at the ring again and then puts it in his pocket. In episode 5, he proposes to Carolyn with the ring.

The swimming ring was first publicly referenced inWhat Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship and Loveby Carole Radziwill, whose late husband, Anthony, was Jackie's nephew. She said that Jackie did indeed have an emerald and diamond band that she called her swimming ring. But unlike in the show, Carolyn's actual engagement ring, Radziwill says, was a recreation of Jackie's ring, not the actual piece.

The Letter

While John is playing touch football in the park in episode 4, he finds an anonymous letter left in his gym bag, one that makes nasty accusations about Carolyn's behavior and character. John asks Carolyn about the contents of the letter and she storms out.

This story hassomebasis in reality. In RoseMarie Terenzio and Liz McNeil's bookJFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography, John's friend Brian Steel explains that he did ask around about Carolyn on John's behalf, and reported negative stories back to his friend. As Steel shared, "[John] went out on a date or two with Carolyn, and he's like, 'I want you to find out as much as you can about Carolyn—I know you know people, like, you know, nightclub people, restaurateurs...I know you know people that went to college with her.' And so I found out as much as I could about her and not all of it was good. I told him all of it. She was a club girl, and she dated a lot of people."

The Boat Pictures

After John and Carolyn reconcile during episode 4, we see them enjoy a day out on his boat in the waters around New York City. The trip seems private and intimate, but when Carolyn returns to work, she sees paparazzi pictures on the front page of theNew York Post.

In reality, the boating trip that wasphotographedtook place in Martha's Vineyard, not New York, and there doesn't seem to have been a front-page story on Bessette in thePostat that time.

It's true that Carolyn was seen making many trips to Cape Cod during her relationship with John, but there were few credible detailed accounts of acrimony during these visits.

In "Battery Park," we see John plan for a big conference that will announce his new magazineGeorgeand unveil the first cover. The fight turned physical, and images were published in theNational Enquirerand theNew York Daily News, which headlined the story "Sunday in the Park with theGeorgeEditor."

Love Storyreplicates these events in episode 5, "Battery Park." Although there's no way to know exactly what Carolyn and John said to each other during this fight—which happened several months after the launch ofGeorgeand several months before their wedding—Love Storydefinitely got the outfits and the setting of the real scene right: Carolyn's sweater and jacket and John's shorts and henley perfectly match what they were wearing in thephotosfrom that day.

The Proposal

In "Battery Park," John proposes to Carolyn while on a boat in Massachusetts. In the show, he says that fishing is better with a partner—and he gives her his mother's swimming ring.

RoseMarie Terenzio, the real JFK Jr.'s former assistant, toldPeoplethat the actual proposal did, in fact, take place on a boat. "He went into this thing about how everything's better with a partner, not just fishing but life," Terenzio recalled, asLove Storyreflects in its fictionalized dialogue between John and Carolyn.

The Rehearsal Dinner

In episode 6, "The Wedding,"Love Storydepicts John and Carolyn hosting their rehearsal dinner and reception on Cumberland Island, a barrier island off the coast of Georgia. This is true to life: The couple did celebrate their nuptials on the tiny island, at the Greyfield Inn, a former Carnegie family home.

The episode also depicts Carolyn's mother, Ann Messina Freeman, going off-book during her toast at the rehearsal dinner. This speech was likely largely fictionalized, but there is some apparent truth within it. AsJFK Jr: An Intimate Oral Biographydescribes, Ann did give a toast during the dinner, and Radziwill—wife to Anthony Radziwill, John's best man—told the biography's authors that "it was sort of a cautionary tale. Something like, 'I hope my daughter has the strength to handle all of this.'"

The Wedding

AsLove Storypainstakingly re-creates, John and Carolyn's candlelit wedding ceremony was held at Cumberland Island's First African Baptist Church, where a small number of guests—less than 50—filled the chapel's pews. According toPeople, John's cousin, Anthony Radziwill, served as his best man, while his sister, Caroline, was Carolyn's maid of honor. Caroline's children, Rose and Tatiana Schlossberg, were flower girls, while her son, Jack Schlossberg, was the couple's ring bearer.

Carolyn wore a now-famous silk-crepe slip dress designed by Narciso Rodriguez, a look she accessorized with silk tulle gloves, Manolo Blahnik shoes, a veil, and a clip that had once belonged to John's mother, Jackie Kennedy Onassis.

According to writer Sunita Kumar Nair, who wroteCBK: A Life in Fashion, Carolyn did arrive late to the church, asLove Storydepicts. Her dress had been in need of last-minute alterations.

In episode 7, "Obsession," John and Carolyn return from their honeymoon, and she expresses her nervousness about walking onto the street where a crowd of reporters had gathered. In both the show and real life, John stepped out ahead of her to speak to the press. "This is a big change for anyone, and for a private citizen even more so," he said, according to aLos Angeles Timesreport. "I ask that you give Carolyn all the privacy and room you can." Just as in the episode, Carolyn stepped out in a camel-colored pencil skirt and black top.

Carolyn's Job Interview

A particularly sadLove Storymoment comes in episode 7, when Carolyn excitedly prepares for a job interview with Ralph Lauren. It's a position she's qualified for, and she seems happy about the possibility of a new job. But when she comes down to the building lobby after the interview, a huge crowd of reporters are waiting for her. She realizes that the hysteria that follows her everywhere would make it too difficult for anyone to hire her. There don't appear to be any public reports of Carolyn interviewing at Ralph Lauren in real life, but it wouldn't be surprising: Her close friend Hamilton South worked at the company.

Anthony's Cancer

Midway through "Obsession," John and Anthony are together in John's apartment when Anthony tells John that his cancer has spread to his lungs. This is sadly true to life. Anthony Radziwill, a television journalist, was diagnosed with sarcoma ahead of his wedding in 1994, his wife Carole Radziwill wrote in her bookWhat Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship and Love. Anthony, who was John's best friend, was sick for five years and died shortly after John, Carolyn, and Lauren Bessette's tragic plane crash.

She begins to play with the children, and when Caroline's young daughter asks to go downstairs to get candy from the doorman, Carolyn takes her. The paparazzi are standing outside, where they're able to see Carolyn and the girl through the glass. This intrusion prompts a major fight between Caroline, Carolyn, and John.

In real life, a picture was captured by the paparazzi that showed Carolyn holding Jack Schlossberg, Caroline's son, in the building lobby. InJFK Jr.: An Intimate Oral Biography,Terenzio describes the scenario playing out similarly to whatLove Storydepicted.

This anecdote about the documentary seems grounded in truth, though it has not been fully verified. ABC has scrubbed the upcoming season of "The Bachelorette," starring Taylor Frankie Paul, citing a newly released video from 2023.

CBS News

Thursday's unprecedented cancellation of the already filmed season of the long-running reality television show comes days before it was to premiere, on Sunday.

"In light of the newly released video just surfaced today, we have made the decision to not move forward with the new season of 'The Bachelorette' at this time, and our focus is on supporting the family," a Disney Entertainment Television spokesperson said in a statement to CBS News.

The statement appeared to reference a 2023 video of an altercation between Paul and her ex-partner, Dakota Mortensen, that was published by TMZ on Thursday. Paul was arrested in 2023 andcharged with aggravated assaultand other offenses, including domestic violence in the presence of a child. She pleaded guilty that August to a misdemeanor charge of aggravated assault; the other charges were dismissed.

A police spokesperson in Draper City, Utah, toldPeoplemagazine that there was an open "domestic assault investigation" of Paul and Mortensen, and that "allegations have been made in both directions." The Draper City Police Department confirmed to CBS News on Thursday evening the accuracy of People's report. Mortensen is the father of one of Paul's three children.

In a statement Thursday night, a spokesperson for Paul said she's "very grateful for ABC's support as she prioritizes her family's safety and security."

"After years of silently suffering extensive mental and physical abuse as well as threats of retaliation, Taylor is finally gaining the strength to face her accuser and taking steps to ensure that she and her children are protected from any further harm," the statement reads. "There are too many women who are suffering in silence as they survive aggressive, jealous ex-partners who refuse to let them move on with their lives."

"Taylor has remained silent out of fear of further abuse, retaliation, and public shaming," the statement concludes. "She is currently exploring all of her options, seeking support, and preparing to own and share her story."

Representatives for Mortensen didn't immediately return requests for comment. ABC's statement didn't include details on what the network planned to do with the show's time slot.

Paul, who was promoting Season 22 as recently as Wednesday on ABC's "Good Morning America" and on the red carpet before Sunday'sOscarstelecast, was an unusual choice to helm "The Bachelorette." Unlike previous leads, the 31-year-old had not appeared on the "Bachelor" franchise before — a departure from the typical practice of casting runners-up from previous seasons.

Her selection did offer synergy, though, as she also stars on "The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives," a Hulu reality show. Both Hulu and ABC are owned by Disney. In a statement confirming her casting in October, ABC credited Paul with "igniting 'MomTok' and going viral for pulling back the curtain on Salt Lake's soft-swinging scene."

Paul became known as an influencer in the #MomTok community, a group of women from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints sharing their lives on TikTok. She made news when she announced in 2022 that she had "stepped out" of an agreement with her husband in terms of relationships with other couples, and they were getting divorced.

"The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives" premiered in 2024. While Season 4 was released last week, filming on Season 5 had already paused over the investigation.

"It was a decision that all of us girls came up with," Paul's co-star Mikayla Matthews said Wednesday on Instagram in response to a fan question about the production freeze. "We didn't feel comfortable filming with everything that was happening."

Paul posted on Instagram in December that filming had wrapped on "The Bachelorette," which is hosted by Jesse Palmer.
