Ryan Coogler's 2026 Oscars Braids Had a Hidden Detail

When it comes to Ryan Coogler's artistry, fromBlack Pantherto his now-Oscar-winning film,Sinners, blink, and you'll miss the tiny, albeit important details. It's perhaps why the 2026 Oscars ceremony honored the film with a performance of the Club Juke montage featuring nods to music past and present. In keeping with the tribute theme, Coogler's sharp Oscars suit was anchored by a story told through his braids.

While accepting his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay from presenters and actors Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans, eagle-eyed fans spotted a guitar design woven into Coogler's stitched cornrows. And not just any guitar—one can guess it's a blues guitar, given the historical and musical climateSinnerswas rooted in. The film celebrated the preservation and reverence of Black art, and that includes Black hair as well. The braids were done by Coogler's go-to hairstylist, Tyzanna B, a Berkeley, California-based braider not too far from Coogler's own stomping grounds of Oakland, which he shouted out in his acceptance speech.

"Please sit down, I'm very nervous and they are going to play me off," Coogler said. "I grew up in Oakland, California, and we can talk a lot."

Coogler thanked the Academy for recognizing the movie, which was released nearly a year ago. "I wanna thank my fellow nominees. I wanna thank y'all for the gifts that y'all movies were and for y'all's friendship over the past years and months," he continued.

Coogler's award wasn't the only oneSinnerstook home that night. Shortly after, the breakout film earned Michael B. Jordan his first Oscar as well, for Best Actor, a full-circle moment for the director-actor pair who first worked together on 2013'sFruitvale Station.

'SNL' pokes fun at RFK Jr. in 'MAHAspital' sketch straight out of 'The Pitt'

"Saturday Night Live"went to the emergency room this week, dragging a satirized, shirtlessRobert F. Kennedy Jr.with them.

USA TODAY

Harry Styles'sMarch 14 hosting duties saw the singer as a Best Buy staffer, a European cruise host and a White Castle drive-thru employee. But one of the night's buzziest sketches was "MAHAspital," a satire on Kennedy's"Make America Healthy Again"agenda in the style of hospital drama"The Pitt."Styles played aDr. Robby-esquecharacter.

In the fake promo "for people who love 'The Pitt' but can't stand its phony liberal science," cast members eyed raw milk IV drips and shelved ivermectin, suggesting treatments of "methylene blue and a full-moon ceremony." Rather than Tylenol or defibrillators, the emergency room staff pitched whey powder, red light therapy masks and "a cold plunge in blue jeans."

"If your favorite character from 'The Pitt' was the guy who punched the nurse in the face, you'll love MAHAspital," a narrator advertises.

"MAHAspital" is a clear dig at the Health and Human Services secretary, whoserecent federal actionsand stances includerevised childhood vaccine guidance, skepticism of psychiatric drugsand aflipped food pyramid.

As nurses triage an 80-year-old possible stroke victim, Styles's character throws in an alternate treatment: "What she needs is a steak. She needs protein, people!"

In another scene, a patient's "testosterone is crashing," leaving Ben Marshall's character to prescribe "bull semen." He later pulls the plug on a comatose patient after finding out they're vegan: "Well, nothing we can do."

The "MAHAspital" sketch, "coming soon to The Daily Wire," culminates in the de facto MAHA leader himself entering the hospital. James Austin Johnson's Kennedy is shirtless and veiny, wheeling in a dead bear in nothing but jeans. It's a reference to the true story of Kennedyhitting and killing a bear cub, then loading it into his car with the intention to skin it and save the meat. But because he was running late for a dinner in the city, he instead staged the bear in Central Park to look like a biker had struck it.

"Prep him!" the satirized "SNL" Kennedy tells staff in "MAHAspital." But not for surgery – for jerky. "He's been dead for days, but the meat's still good."

It's not the first time "SNL" has mocked Kennedy. In Nov. 2024, Alec Baldwin swapped his storied impersonation of PresidentDonald Trumpfor Kennedy in asketch about cabinet picks.

"Americans need someone to teach them how to be healthy, someone like me: a 70-year-old man with movie-star looks and a worm in his brain," Baldwin's Kennedy said. Later, he said, "I care deeply about a woman's right to choose: to choose to give her child polio."

6 Surprising Rules Oscar Nominees and Attendees Have to Follow

From award snubs to showstopping fashion, theOscarsalways deliver a night of surprises — but even more shocking are the strict etiquette rules nominees and attendees must follow.

Presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), the Oscars (also known as the Academy Awards) recognize the most outstanding films, performances, and creative achievements of the year. The Oscars have been held at the iconic Dolby Theater in Los Angeles since 2001, with the biggest names in Hollywood in attendance.

Tickets to the Oscars are incredibly hard to come by, and moreover, they include their own set of rules. Guests must abide by the academy's specific dress code and adhere to the venue's policies. The night's winners and seat-fillers are subject to additional rules as well.

The 98th Academy Awards will air on March 15 at 7 p.m. ET. In the meantime, learn more about the rules all Oscar nominees and attendees have to follow.

There is a strict formal dress code

During her decades-long run as the awards show's fashion consultant, Edith Head enforced a white tie dress code, in which actresses were requested to wear "formal evening gowns either maxi or floor length [in] preferably pastel shades," peran archived notefrom the AMPAS. "Mini" or "day length" dresses were discouraged as well as the color red and "glittery looks."

Men were requested to dress in "white tie with conventional formal evening accessories."

The event has since transitioned to a more black-tie affair, and in recent years, the Academy has encouraged attendees to bring sustainable fashion to the red carpet by wearing vintage, borrowed, or recycled looks, per itsSustainable Style Guide.

Bathroom breaks should be timed to commercial breaks

Once the cameras start rolling, guests are asked to remain seated, which means bathroom breaks should be timed around commercial breaks.

In 2013, a longtime AMPAS member and Oscars attendee toldVanity Fair, "Time your toilet needs so that you can get to the bathroom and back before the telecast continues, or you won't be able to get back in until the next commercial break."

Outside food and drinks are prohibited

The Dolby Theater doesn't permit outside food or drinks, including water — however, that hasn't stopped some celebrities from sneaking in snacks.

At the 2014 Oscars, host Ellen DeGeneres memorablyhanded out pizza slicesin between award presentations. In 2020, child actress Julia Butters wasspotted eating a turkey sandwichon the red carpet.

"It's the Oscars, there can't be any regrets. There's no going back," she told PEOPLE at the time.

Acceptance speeches shouldn't exceed 45 seconds

The AMPAS introduced a rule limiting acceptance speeches to 45 seconds, at which point play-off music begins. However, many winners still go over the time limit.

The longest Oscar speech in history belongs to Adrien Brody, whose Best Actor acceptance monologue in 2025lasted five minutes and 40 seconds.

"I'm wrapping up, please, please, please. I'm wrapping up. I will wrap up. Please. Turn the music off," he said mid-speech.

Seat fillers have a strict set of rules

To maintain the appearance of a full audience, the venue uses seat fillers to take the place of nominees and attendees during bathroom breaks or if someone skips out early.

In 2026, content creator Arjun Manjunath spoke to PEOPLE about hisexperience being a seat filler at major awards shows. According to Manjunath, there is a strict formal dress code that seat fillers must abide by. And, they aren't supposed to speak to talent unless a celebrity initiates a conversation first."You can't talk to them unless they talk to you first — only organic interactions," Manjuath told PEOPLE. "It was very dystopian. VeryHunger Gamesvibes."

Winners aren't allowed to sell their Oscar statues

How much is an Oscar statue worth? Despite its 24-karat gold plating, its resale value is just $1 due to AMPAS regulations.

"Award winners shall not sell or otherwise dispose of the Oscar statuette, nor permit it to be sold or disposed of by operation of law, without first offering to sell it to the Academy for the sum of $1.00. This provision shall apply also to the heirs and assigns of Academy Award winners who may acquire a statuette by gift or bequest,"states the Academy's rules.

Gwyneth Paltrow is Hollywood royalty at the 2026 Oscars.

TheMarty Supremestar looked lovely and absolutely timeless in a strapless ivory gown and diamonds on the Academy Awards red carpet.

While classic from the front, her dress offered a hint of drama from the side, where a cutout ran all the way down her body, revealing some skin. Sparkly mesh fabric covered the opening.

Paltrow famously won an Oscar early on in her career—the Best Actress award at the 1999 Oscars for her performance as Viola de Lesseps inShakespeare in Love. Embodying her character in the romantic comedy-drama, she wore a beautiful strapless pink gown from Ralph Lauren, which she styled with a fantastic diamond necklace, diamond earrings, and a neat ballerina bun.

She has not been nominated since, partly because she took a long break from Hollywood to run her wellness-lifestyle business, Goop.

ButMarty Supremegot her back on the screen, and back into the awards circuit. Paltrow hassaidthat she was "petrified" and "very, very rusty" when she first arrived on the film set—and even doubted her ability to act again. But director Josh Safdie's decision to make her first scene be the moment where her character, Kay Stone, returns to the stage, helped her ease into filming, as it tapped into her real-life theater background.

To celebrate the film, she has been by her co-stars' side all awards season; earlier this month, she even made a stunning appearance at the Actor Awards (in atransparent, black lace gown).
