When Jake sat down on Tuesday's show, Colbert explained that Maggie had left the missive, but she wouldn't explain what it meant. She had simply said that she was tucking her note into the chair.

"I don't know what she left you," Colbert said.

"'You're a beast' is what she wrote," Jake said, before confirming that the phrase, held meaning for the siblings.

"My sister did a show on Broadway that she was acting in," Jake said, "and it was an amazing experience for her, but also she was going through things. I went into her dressing room before opening night — one of the previews maybe — and I just wrote, 'You're a beast.'"

As if that weren't sweet enough, Jake said that they then made a habit of writing the simple sentence on each another's mirrors.

"She's written it on my mirror every opening night," he explained to Colbert and his audience.

Interestingly, Jake said he thought the new movie,The Bride!, that his sister directed is connected to the message.

"I think that's part of what her movie is about," Jake said. "And I think it's also about all of us seeing that in each other and communally going out together experiencing life, like you would here or like you would at a rock concert, or why you'd go to the movies, to go experience something together and feel that part of yourself."

Jake then quipped, "That's also something she told me to say, that she forgot to tell everybody last night," to big laughs.

Epstein estate's $35 million settlement with accusers wins preliminary judge approval

By Luc Cohen

Reuters

NEW YORK, March 3 (Reuters) - A U.S. judge granted preliminary approval on Tuesday to an agreement for Jeffrey Epstein's estate to pay as much as $35 ‌million to resolve a class action lawsuit that accused two of the disgraced financier's ‌advisers of aiding and abetting his sex trafficking of young women and teenage girls.

Boies Schiller Flexner, a law firm representing Epstein victims, announced the settlement on February 19. On Tuesday, Manhattan-based U.S. District Judge Arun Subramanian said the agreement appeared fair. The judge scheduled a hearing for September 16 to consider granting final approval.

The deal would bring an end to a 2024 lawsuit filed against Epstein's former personal lawyer ‌Darren Indyke and former accountant Richard Kahn, who are co-executors of Epstein's estate.

Epstein's estate previously set up a restitution fund that paid out $121 million to victims. The estate also paid $49 million in additional settlements to victims.

Daniel Weiner, a lawyer for Indyke and Kahn, said neither man admitted wrongdoing or conceded misconduct as part of the settlement.

"Because they did nothing wrong, the co-executors were prepared to fight the claims against them through to trial, but agreed to mediate and settle this lawsuit ‌in order to achieve finality as to any potential claims against the Epstein Estate," Weiner said in a statement.

Sigrid McCawley, a lawyer who brought the case, said in a statement, "We are pleased we could take another step forward on that long road for the survivors and provide some sort of justice."

Epstein died in a New York jail in August 2019. His death was ‌ruled a suicide.

Millions of documents released this year by the Justice Department from its investigation into Epstein have shed light on his social ties to wealthy and powerful people around the world.

In the 2024 lawsuit, lawyers at Boies ‌Schiller Flexner said Indyke and Kahn helped Epstein create a complex web of corporations and bank accounts that let him hide his abuses and pay victims and recruiters. Indyke and Kahn were "richly compensated" for their work, the lawsuit said.

The Boies law firm previously helped obtain $365 ‌million of settlements with JPMorgan Chase and Deutsche Bank after accusing them of missing red flags about Epstein, once a lucrative client.

Florida public universities temporarily halt hiring foreigners on H1-B visas

By Jasper Ward

Reuters

March 3 (Reuters) - Florida's public universities will temporarily halt hiring foreign faculty members using the H-1B ‌visa program, which allows employers to recruit highly skilled ‌professionals in specialized occupations.

The move comes after Florida Governor Ron DeSantis directed schools last October to crack down on what he described as "visa abuse" in higher education.

The Florida Board of Governors, which oversees the state's public universities, voted for a temporary ban that will stay ‌in effect until January 5, 2027, according to the regulation posted on the board's website.

The move will only affect new employees at the 12 universities in the State University System of Florida.

Last year, U.S. President Donald Trump imposed a one-time $100,000 fee for new H-1B visa applicants amid his wider crackdown on immigration in ‌the United States.

The office of DeSantis and the board of governors were not immediately available for contact.

The H-1B visa program allows foreign professionals in specialized occupations - primarily in science, technology, engineering and mathematics - to work in the U.S. It offers 65,000 visas ‌annually, with another 20,000 visas for workers with advanced degrees, approved for three to six years.

More than 600 beneficiaries were approved for H-1B visas ‌by the 12 Florida schools last year, according to data on the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services' website.

Last October, DeSantis said U.S. universities "were importing foreign workers on H-1B visas instead of ‌hiring Americans who are qualified and available to do the job".
