Guglielmo Vicario has tried to placate Tottenham supporters after a fractious post-match exchange in Alkmaar. The Spurs goalkeeper turned and stormed off when his attempts to gee up those in the away end following the 1-0 defeat in the first leg of a Europa League last-16 tie with AZ backfired and instead unleashed a barrage of abuse. He had played well in a poor team display, making saves to keep the tie alive but those fans inside the AFAS Stadium were not in the mood to celebrate.

The highest wage bills in European football for the 2023-24 season have been revealed, with six Premier League clubs taking up spots in the top 10. PSG top the list after the French champions paid their players a combined total of €658m (£553m), while LaLiga giants Real Madrid (£424m) and Barcelona (£400m) also feature in the top four. But the rest of the list is dominated by English clubs.

The England and Wales Cricket Board has apologised after deleting a social media post that made light of Pope Francis' 'love of the Ashes'. The 88-year-old Pope, who has been in hospital since February after being diagnosed with double pneumonia, wrote on his X account on Wednesday: 'The #Ashes remind us of who we are, which does us good. 'It puts us in our place, smooths out the rough edges of our narcissism, brings us back to reality, and makes us more humble and open to one another.
