Ex-Premier League star is sacked by EFL club - after poor run of results leaves the side facing potential relegation battle

Wigan have sacked Shaun Maloney following their 2-1 home loss to Reading. The latest defeat has left the Latics 15th in the third tier and six points above the relegation zone with just one win from the last seven matches. In a statement, the club said: 'It cannot be overlooked that the current League One campaign has clearly not progressed as anticipated. 'Home results and performances, in particular, have been disappointing and below the standard at which our supporters expect.

'Ugly, boring, horrible': Fans vent their fury over latest makeover for women's tennis - but despite the ordeals of Iga Swiatek, Emma Raducanu and Elena Rybakina, the sport is flourishing

They say there's no such thing as bad publicity, which is perhaps just as well for the latest attempt to transform the image of women's tennis. The launch of a new logo for the Women's Tennis Association, unveiled this week along with a revamped colour scheme and a fresh rallying cry, has occasioned much chatter among fans, with 'ugly', 'boring' and 'horrible' among the kinder verdicts. Kristina Mladenovic, a former doubles world No 1 and winner of nine grand slam doubles titles, echoed the wider reaction on social media, questioning the rationale behind a change that has polarised opinion.

Ruben Amorim needs a radical Sir Alex Ferguson-style rebuild at Manchester United but has been given a far weaker hand than recent managers at Old Trafford, writes JOE BERNSTEIN

Curiously, no team bar Manchester City has won more trophies in the last nine years than Manchester United, even though it's widely accepted that standards at Old Trafford have declined alarmingly. Between them, Louis van Gaal, Jose Mourinho and Erik ten Hag won four domestic cups and a Europa League. For Tottenham, Newcastle or Everton, it would represent a golden period, but not for United, languishing in the most prestigious competitions since Sir Alex Ferguson left in 2013.

Former Liverpool manager claims he's 'waiting' to return to the Premier League and reveals why he snubbed new managerial job abroad

A former Liverpool manager says he is 'waiting' for a return to the Premier League after turning down a new job abroad. The coach in question has been out of work for a year since leaving LaLiga outfit Celta Vigo in March 2024. After just over six months in the job, he was sacked after winning just five games in 28 matches throughout his latest stint in Spain. But now, he appears ready to make a return to the Premier League, where he had a successful spell as the man in charge of Liverpool.
