FIFA blasted by human rights charity Amnesty International over 'astonishing whitewash' which sees Saudi Arabia close in on being awarded 2034 World Cup

FIFA have been accused of a 'whitewash' after awarding top marks to Saudi Arabia's controversial bid to stage the World Cup in 2034. World football's governing body gave the oil-rich kingdom a record score in an evaluation of the Saudis' fitness to host the finals, saying the tournament carried a 'medium' human rights risk. FIFA's endorsement paves the way for the Saudi bid, the only one for the 2034 tournament, to be rubber-stamped on December 11.

How a chance meeting got former Tottenham star Sandro out of retirement to play for seventh-tier Harborough Town in the biggest game in their history

The effervescent manager of Harborough Town is holding court in his press conference when he is suddenly interrupted by a familiar figure strolling through the door. 'Sorry I'm late,' says the former Brazil and Tottenham midfielder Sandro, who has arrived half-an-hour behind schedule after driving 100 miles from London to Leicestershire. 'That's a fine!' bellows beaming boss Mitch Austin to much laughter, as his sheepish new signing blames the traffic before finding a space to stand next to the bricklayer, gas engineer and glazier who he now calls his team-mates.

Jamie Redknapp has questioned Martin Odegaard's decision to not take both penalties in Arsenal's 5-2 win over West Ham. The Gunners secured a third consecutive victory across all competition and moved up to second in the Premier League table after a thrilling win at the London Stadium. Arsenal's third goal of the match came through Odegaard, who converted from the spot after regular penalty taker Saka handed him the ball.

Lewis Hamilton hits back at critics amid  woeful qualifying record against team-mate George Russell - who is bumped up to Qatar GP pole following penalty to Max Verstappen for impeding Mercedes star

A defiant Lewis Hamilton refused to go gentle into the Qatar night, insisting: 'I know I've still got it. It's not a question in my mind.' The world's most garlanded driver suffered another curiously difficult day – and said he could not wait to leave Mercedes – as he qualified a lowly sixth but a glaring 0.436sec behind his team-mate George Russell, who was second fastest but was later promoted to pole when Max Verstappen was demoted a place for impeding the Englishman by 'driving unnecessarily slowly' as they geared up for their final flying laps.

A world record crowd for a women's friendly match headed to Wembley to see two managerial greats face off against each other. It was a homecoming for USA head coach Emma Hayes, England women's most decorated club manager of all time. And with the Euros fast approaching, it was the perfect opportunity for the Lionesses to test their mettle ahead of their title defence next summer – the world number two taking on the world number one and the stars were aligned for a thriller.
