GRAEME SOUNESS: Why Anthony Martial, who has joined AEK Athens aged 28, is the best example of where Man United have gone wrong

I noted this week that Anthony Martial has joined AEK Athens in Greece. Maybe, even at 28, that is his level. In his nine seasons at Manchester United, no player better captured the club's malaise. He is the best example of where they have gone wrong. I said about four years ago, entering a new season, that it had to be Martial's last-chance saloon. I cannot believe it was only this summer that he finally left the club.

Why Steve Borthwick MUST pick England's forgotten man to do battle with the All Blacks, writes CHRIS FOY

It's time to make more noise about a quiet man. Ben Spencer is not one for talking the talk, but he keeps walking the walk and he is long overdue more luck and game time at Test level. On Friday night, Bath's captain was back in his familiar routine, orchestrating a West Country win in alliance with the great Scot outside him, Finn Russell. Spencer scored a try, set up another, was named man of the match and presented the medal to his daughter at the Rec.

Ilkay Gundogan reveals why Man City's rivalry with Arsenal is 'different' to Liverpool - and the surprise details of his return from Barcelona

There is no such thing as the perfect footballer, the flawless sportsman. Everybody has a weakness somewhere. Don't they? It is a concept that has preoccupied Ilkay Gundogan for years. It accompanied him to Barcelona when he left Manchester City – seemingly for good – in the summer of 2023 and – now that he has returned – it has followed him back again. He is a father now to an 18-month-old boy and there is another on the way.

Aston Villa's European Cup-winning captain Dennis Mortimer is on a mission to reclaim iconic kit when Bayern Munich come to town

Sitting on a small wooden chair in a small wooden hut in the grounds of a garden centre in Staffordshire is one of a select group of special footballing men. To his side — gleaming a little as the light filters through the door — is proof of his membership. Dennis Mortimer and the European Cup. Forty-two years after Aston Villa shocked Bayern Munich in the final in Rotterdam, they still look quite at home together.

Mikel Arteta is now trying to put out the fire he ignited in his row with Pep Guardiola, writes IAN HERBERT - Arsenal boss' response is a lesson in how to take the temperature down

They've been trying to put out the fire here all week here. The fire Mikel Arteta ignited with barely 20 words, uttered in his discussion of Manchester City's allegations of Arsenal's 'dark arts', on Tuesday. It's hard to believe that Arsenal's manager did not appreciate that those words about his time at City – 'I was there for four years. I have all the information. So I know. Believe me' – would be subject to multiple interpretations, at a time when City are defending themselves against Premier League charges of financial deceit.
