A boy in Florida was injured by a dumbbell after his mother allegedly left him and his three siblings home alone as she traveled to Las Vegas, authorities said.

Irene Miller, 50, is facing four counts of child neglect without great bodily harm in connection with the case, according to a press release from the Osceola County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies responded to the woman’s home on the night of Oct. 21 after a girl called 911 to report that a dumbbell fell on her 9-year-old brother’s head, the sheriff’s office said. The boy was taken to the hospital for treatment and was discharged.

First responders also found three other children, ages 14, 12 and 11, home alone. The sheriff’s office then contacted Miller, the children’s mother, who allegedly said she went to Las Vegas for work on Oct. 18 and planned to return on Oct. 23.

“She told deputies that she had a babysitter coming from Tampa in the mornings to get the children ready for school and to check on them after school, but she did not require her to stay the night,” investigators claimed.

The sheriff’s office said the children’s father agreed to take them to his home as investigators made plans to meet with Miller on Oct. 23 once she arrived back in Florida that morning.

Body camera footage shared on Facebook shows deputies approaching Miller as she exits the plane before escorting her to a separate area. She is then handcuffed and taken to a police vehicle.

Miller was booked into county jail on the four child neglect charges, according to the sheriff’s office. It’s unclear if she has entered a plea or retained an attorney to speak on her behalf.
