After eight years on the show, actor Rory Douglas-Speed exited the hit series Hollyoaks as the fan favorite character Joel Dexter. Now the actor is reflecting on his time on the soap, and one of the stories that became his favorite.
Earlier this month Douglas-Speed joined the Tom's Talk podcast and was interviewed about his time on the hit show, as well as tackling the subject of male mental health as well as living life with diabetes.
Reflecting on his eight years on the soap, the actor shared some of his favorite storylines that he was a part of on the program. "The most valuable was the baby loss storyline I did last year and I was working with a girl Kirsty Leigh Porter who lost her child. Working with someone in that space with that intensity was is in incredible. I mean really challenging because you feel like you know you've got to withhold the standard. I've never experienced it before. So I had to throw myself right in, with someone who has lived it and is living it. It's like it doesn't ever stop. It's constantly here, right? So, when you've got to bring a really truthful performance when in that story, we lose the baby and it's born. I was like, I need to get this right, and to do it and be in that space was unbelievable for so many reasons."
The actor shared how the story touched viewers throughout the world and they were able to reach out and express their thanks via social media. Adding, "But when it aired I've got these families messaging going we've literally just experienced this cannot thank you enough for what you and Kirsty have done and how the show perceived this, how the writers have done this. That's why you do it. That's the job right there. That was really special, that'll never leave me, because it was two or three weeks of really long days of like pure emotion. That was an amazing thing to be a part of. So, I was really grateful for that. And Kirsty actually letting me and having me do that with her was special. It was therapy for her as well. It was amazing."
