<p>Since it began in 2000, Big Brother has been a staple on American screens.</p>
<p>The reality show — which is based on the Dutch show of the same name — is the longest-running adaptation in the Big Brother franchise. The pared-back competition series follows Houseguests as they live together and gradually nominate each other to be evicted.</p>
<p>Over the years, some Big Brother seasons have been more memorable than others, either because of the twists or the Houseguests themselves.</p>
<p>On July 10, season 27 will premiere on CBS, hosted as always by Julie Chen Moonves. The new episodes will follow a "Hotel Mystère" theme — which includes a mystery Houseguest, whom Moonves says is "epic."</p>
<p>"That person is also very polarizing," she told Entertainment Weekly in July 2025. "So there's going to be a strong reaction in both directions for this mystery Houseguest."</p>
<p>Ahead of season 27, here are the 12 best Big Brother seasons to watch, all of which are available to stream on Paramount+.</p>

<p>Big Brother Season 2.</p>
<p>Season 2 of Big Brother saw plenty of changes from the first season, which followed the Dutch format more closely. For the sophomore season, CBS shifted the series so it more closely resembled the network's hit show Survivor, which also premiered in 2000. Now, the contestants (a.k.a. the "Houseguests") would vote to evict their peers, not the American public.</p>
<p>The season was the first to implement the "Head of Household" competition. The winner of each week's H.O.H. would receive immunity, their own bedroom and the power to nominate two Houseguests for the upcoming eviction.</p>
<p>These switch-ups gave rise to the gameplay that viewers have enjoyed ever since. Winner Will Kirby became known as "Dr. Evil" for his strategic manipulation — and his refusal to hide his antics. While there weren't as many twists and turns that Big Brother later became known for, season 2 is looked back on fondly as the year the show began to find its feet.</p>

<p>Big Brother season 3 saw an increase in ratings from the previous year — and it's not difficult to see why. Season 3 was the first season to have a "Power of Veto" competition (though the holder couldn't use it to save themselves).</p>
<p>But fan favorite Danielle Reyes, who masterminded the season and had a secret alliance with Jason Guy, was labeled a villain and didn't win.</p>
<p>In part, this was because the jury had access to final episodes of the show, meaning they got to see all of her confessionals, per Entertainment Weekly. The season propelled her to legend status — even earning her a spot on The Traitors season 3.</p>
<p>Season 4</p>

<p>Big Brother season 4 was the first to have a sequestered jury following the events of the previous year. But it also marked the first time contestants with a history outside of the house appeared together: Five of the original eight Houseguests learned that their ex-partners would be playing the game, too.</p>
<p>This season was packed with plenty of drama. Amanda Craig and David Lane became the first Big Brother pair to be caught on camera having sex in the house. Meanwhile, Craig's ex Scott Weintraub was removed from the house after he threw chairs and dared producers to, "Come in and get me. You can't f------ handle me. It will take three of you."</p>

<p>Big Brother season 5 remains memorable for its Project DNA — or "Project Do Not Assume" — theme, which had two main twists.</p>
<p>Twin sisters Adria Montgomery-Klein and Natalie Montgomery-Carroll took turns to play one Houseguest before going on to compete as separate contestants. Meanwhile, Michael "Cowboy" Ellis and Jennifer "Nakomis" Dedmon found out that they shared the same father while in the house, making them half-siblings.</p>
<p>With Dedmon's masterful takedown of Jase Wirey, this season also marked the advent of the "backdoor" elimination.</p>
<p>Season 6</p>

<p>Some of the show's most iconic characters arrived in Big Brother season 6, including the alliance of Janelle Pierzina and Kaysar Ridha, who were part of a bigger alliance, the Sovereign Six. This grouping went head-to-head against The Friendship week after week.</p>
<p>The year also had the "Summer of Secrets" twist, with each housemate being paired with a secret partner. Each pair knew their partner before entering the house, and each believed they were the only secret pair in the house. If both members of a pair reached the final two, the winner and runner-up would have received $1 million and $250,000, respectively.</p>
<p>In one epic scene, Ridha figured out that everyone in the game — not just him — had a secret partner.</p>

<p>Big Brother season 7 or Big Brother: All-Stars was a little different. Before the season began, 20 potential candidates were revealed publicly, with fans having the chance to vote for their favorite past Houseguests.</p>
<p>Fourteen contestants made the cut, comprising the top four male and top four female candidates from the public vote and another six chosen by the producers.</p>
<p>Among those to return included Kirby, Reyes, Dedmon and Pierzina, leading to a season that was full of drama. While the all-stars format was a twist on its own, the season itself was largely free from gimmicks, succeeding on the strength of the cast.</p>
<p>Season 10</p>

<p>Big Brother Season 10.</p>
<p>Big Brother season 10 is a classic, in large part due to Dan Gheesling becoming the first Houseguest to have a perfect game. (He received no eviction votes against him all season, and then went on to beat runner-up Robert "Memphis" Garrett in a unanimous jury vote.)</p>
<p>The cast as a whole was strong in Big Brother 10, with Houseguests including Jessie Godderz, Libra Thompson, Bryan Ollie and Jerry MacDonald — the oldest contestant in the show's history at 75 years old — all helping to bring the drama.</p>
<p>In one of the series' most memorable conflicts, a fight broke out between nearly everybody in the house on the same day as Keesha Smith's birthday.</p>
<p>Season 14</p>

<p>Big Brother Season 14.</p>
<p>Four Houseguests from previous seasons returned for Big Brother season 14, including Gheesling. However, they entered as coaches, with each one mentoring three of the new contestants. Two weeks in, viewers voted to allow the coaches to return to the game as regular Houseguests, and three of them accepted the offer.</p>
<p>During season 14, Gheesling provided one of the most famous moments in Big Brother history by giving himself a "funeral" after he was in solitary confinement and at risk of eviction.</p>
<p>Plus, Brittany Haynes' hilarious confessionals, Pierzina's big personality and Ian Terry's savvy game combined to make Big Brother season 14 one of the most entertaining.</p>
<p>Season 17</p>

<p>Big Brother season 17 saw the return of past twists, including bringing in twins like season 5 and continuing with season 16's Battle of the Block. While the twists received a mixed reception, the season has one of the fandom's most beloved casts, including big personalities like Meg Maley, James Huling and Dr. John "Johnny Mac" McGuire.</p>
<p>Vanessa Rousso, a professional poker player, was the clear favorite to win. But she was beaten by Steve Moses after he won three of the final four Head of Household contests, allowing him to cut Rousso in the final three.</p>
<p>Season 20</p>

<p>Big Brother season 20 is often seen as a return to form for the show, with a classic battle between alliances playing out. But one grouping, FOUTTE (which stood for Five of Us Till the End), wasn't nearly as successful as the other, Level Six, with the former's last remaining Houseguest, Haleigh Broucher, finishing in seventh place.</p>
<p>Other notable moments include Tyler Crispen's explosive fight with Bayleigh Dayton, plus Kaitlyn Herman famously failing to complete a simple puzzle to stay in the game.</p>
<p>Season 23</p>
<p>Kyland Young, Azah Awasum, Tiffany Mitchel, Hannah Chaddha, Xavier Prather, and Derek Frazier on Big Brother.</p>
<p>Season 23 made Big Brother history: The edition featured a secret alliance, The Cookout, with the goal of having the first-ever Black winner.</p>
<p>The grouping — which featured Azah Awasum, Derek Frazier, Kyland Young, Hannah Chaddha, Tiffany Mitchell and Xavier Prather — accomplished its aim, with Prather taking home the victory. The move came on the heels of CBS' 2020 diversity pledge, which promised that future casts of their reality shows would contain at least 50 percent Black, Indigenous or people of color cast members.</p>
<p>Outside of The Cookout, Claire Rehfuss, Derek Xiao, Alyssa Lopez and Brandon "Frenchie" French worked tirelessly to find the hidden alliance — which they ultimately couldn't do. Nevertheless, the ongoing mystery made this season endlessly entertaining.</p>
<p>Season 24</p>

<p>Season 24 did not start off well for beauty pageant titleholder Taylor Hale: She was ostracized and bullied, nearly getting voted off countless times.</p>
<p>But through that turmoil, a new alliance called The Leftovers emerged, propelling Hale to victory after surviving the block six times. (She also became the first Black woman to win the show.)</p>
<p>Through this, Hale has even become one of the series' most notable faces, appearing on the spinoff Reindeer Games.</p>
