Whether you're a rookie retiree or have been out of the workforce for years, the summer is a time to kick back, put your feet up and soak up the sunshine. If you're ready for a low-stress, high-savings summer, Marshalls is the place to go. From pool parties to beach days to grandkid time, Marshalls has seasonal deals that can help you save big before prices heat up.

To get the inside scoop on what's worth grabbing, GOBankingRates spoke to Joanie Demer, money-saving expert and co-founder of The Krazy Coupon Lady. Here are five types of summer items she recommended retirees pick up now.

Sunscreen

It's easy to overspend on sunscreen, especially if you're already at the beach or on vacation and need sun protection fast.

"If you can find a brand you like at Marshalls, snap it up," Demer said. "At Marshalls and their sister store, TJ Maxx, we've seen sunscreen 10% to 30% lower than what we'd see at big-box stores. You won't necessarily find a lot of bottles, so the best strategy is to check a few times a week and buy as you find them."

Inventory changes quickly, so you might have to dig through the skincare aisles — or even make more than one visit — but the savings will be well worth the extra effort.

Dining Ware

Plan on hosting your children or neighbors for dinner on the patio this summer? Marshalls has tons of unique and affordable dishware for elevating summer gatherings — without the high price tag.

"Things with summery patterns will likely get cheaper after summer, so before summer, concentrate on more spring-y patterns, like florals and pastels," Demer said. "This can be a good way to prepare for outdoor parties and pay half of what you would at a big-box store."

It's a serious step up from paper plates and cups for less than what you would pay at other major retailers.

Toys

For retirees whose summer will include little visitors, Marshalls is a solid stop for high-value finds that'll keep kiddos entertained for hours (and out from underfoot).

"Look for sand pails, scooters, toy cars, puzzles and books," Demer said. "The beach and pool-specific stuff is smarter to buy at the end of the season, but Marshalls tends to have solid toy prices, no matter the season."

Summer Clothing and Swimwear

Don't wait until you're invited to a last-minute pool party to realize your swimsuit has seen better days. Marshalls' racks are already stocked with fantastic-value swimwear, and prices look good.

"The name of the game at Marshalls is to shop a season behind if you want the absolute best price possible," Demer said. "But shopping now can be strategic. Heading into summer, Marshalls has 20% to 50% off swimsuit prices compared to similar swimwear at other stores."

Think ahead and avoid stressing over "having nothing to wear" when a last-minute invite pops up.

Beach Essentials

Still using the same beach chair you've had since 2005? It's probably time for an upgrade. Marshalls has beach bags, chairs, umbrellas and towels that are functional, look great and won't cost you a mini fortune.

"While prices will get better at the end of the season on clearance, a lot of these plastic and polyester affordable beach accessories are imported, which means that they could be more expensive next year if tariffs stick," Demer said. "Consider buying them now at Marshalls while the selection is still plentiful enough that you have lots of options."

Get ahead of any potential tariff pricing by picking up beach essentials while prices are low.

Editor's note: Pricing and availability may vary depending on location.
