It's a predicament Tom Daley has faced all his life: half the population of China is male and they unfailingly deploy their two best-equipped men to slip into a pool as quietly as pebbles. He has beaten them at their own vertiginous game once, when he achieved a lifetime's dream in Tokyo three years ago, but this time he was content with a silver medal behind the red acrobatic team.
