Kate McKinnon always leaves the audience laughing.

Her original idea of how to do that when she exited *Saturday Night Live *in 2022, after a decade in the show's cast, would have been very tongue-forward if it had aired.

"My pitch was that I did this character Sheila Sovage, the barfly," McKinnon explained to Amy Poehler on Tuesday's episode of the *Good Hang* podcast. "And my pitch was that I would tongue every single person in the cast in a line, and I thought, ultimately, that the alien thing was a little more meaningful and had a better tone. So, we went with that."

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

She added, "So everyone narrowly missed sucking my face."

Poehler, who was an *SNL* cast member herself from 2001 to 2008, quipped that it would have been "a goodbye tonguing."

McKinnon told a similar story in August 2022, noting that COVID restrictions helped shut that down.

Instead, she played another of her recurring characters in her final moments in the cast: Colleen Rafferty, a woman who always has a comically bad encounter with aliens she meets; meanwhile, the others being studied, who also came face-to-face with an extraterrestrial being, describe bliss.

This time, Miss Rafferty agreed to go with the aliens permanently. Fans saw her boarding a spaceship and waving goodbye.

"Well, Earth, I love ya," McKinnon said, as she appeared to he holding back tears. "Thanks for letting me stay a while."

When she left *SNL*, McKinnon held the record for the longest a woman had been on the cast.

Looking back, she noted that the experience had been "very emotional," because "it was everything to me, and those people are everything to me."

Known for her impressions of Hillary Clinton, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Kellyanne Conway, and many others, McKinnon was nominated for nine Emmys — two of which she won — during her decade on the show.

When she left, McKinnon said doing so hadn't been an easy decision.

"I thought about it for a very long time, and it was very, very hard," McKinnon told Kelly Ripa on *Live With Kelly and Ryan*. "All I ever wanted to do in my whole life was be on *Saturday Night Live*. So, I did, I loved it, I had the best decade, and then I was just like, my body was tired, and I felt like it was time."

Since leaving the *SNL* cast, McKinnon has returned to host *SNL* and has appeared in movies such as *Barbie* and *The Roses*.**

We're used to seeing *Survivor* players doubling over or collapsing after an exhausting challenge in intense heat. What we're *not* used to seeing is that sort of activity from the *Survivor* host, but that's exactly what happened this week on *Survivor 49.*

The scene was a day 11 reward challenge, before which the remaining players were redivided into three new tribes. The contestants then had to compete in a physically taxing challenge that involved pushing a heavy cart along a bumpy path, stacking sand bags, climbing ladders, knocking discs off poles, and then finally knocking down four bamboo targets.

But the players were not the only ones running on empty after the contest. Jeff Probst walked to the side after calling the challenge and immediately doubled over with his hands on his knees.

"Jeff, you out of breath, too?" asked Rizo Velovic.

"It's no joke, man," answered Probst.

"Welcome to *Survivor*," Rizo responded, not able to pass up the opportunity of throwing one of Probst's most famous lines back at the host.

***Want to be kept up with all things Survivor? Dig deep and sign up for 's free Survivor Weekly newsletter to have all the latest news, interviews, and commentary sent right to your inbox. ***

Probst was asked about the oppressive heat that led to his post-challenge exhaustion on the latest episode of the *On Fire with Jeff Prosbt* podcast, and the host revealed that the particular spot where they ran that competition was partly to blame.

"The island where that challenge took place is the single hottest spot we ever shoot in Fiji," Probst says on the podcast. "It might be the hottest spot in all of Fiji."

And why is that? "I don't know why," Probst continues. "And I've asked people on our team, and I never get a good answer. And I'm sure there's somebody listening right now saying 'Probst, it's a basic barometric pressure thing.'"

But whatever the reason, the heat is suffocating in that particular challenge field (which is used for various competitions over the course of a season). "It is so dense [in] that one spot. It's like you're in a sauna and someone is pouring more water on the coals. And I'm not exaggerating."

Jeff Probst explains why no season 40 winners were asked back for 'Survivor 50'

It's also a sweltering wake-up call compared to what precedes it. "Here's what happens," explains the host. "You have this amazing boat ride. It's beautiful skies, the wind is blowing your hair back, you feel amazing. And then you step off the boat and walk into this dense forest."

And then it becomes something of a competition among the crew to see who is going to mention it first. "The cliche is, everybody says, 'Man, it's so hot today.' And we all know we say it and we all try *not* to say it. 'I'm not gonna say it today. I'm not gonna complain about the heat. I'm not gonna say anything.' And then you walk in and you go, 'But my God, it's hot! It's so hot again today!'"

While the host and showrunner has talked early and often about how debilitating the heat is this season, his *On Fire* cohost (and *Survivor: Cambodia* winner) Jeremy Collins has faced worse, and he's been able to do the comparison himself.

"I've been to Cambodia," Jeremy reminds Probst on the podcast. "And, to me, Cambodia is the hottest place on Earth. And I've been to Fiji. There's no way it's hotter than Cambodia."

To that, the host agrees. "No, I think Cambodia was the hottest place we've ever shot. You win that."

(The Center Square) – Rep. Cecil Brockman, the embattled sixth-term Democrat from Guilford County in the North Carolina House of Representatives, late Friday announced his resignation.

Court records indicate the 41-year-old is charged in offenses with a 15-year-old. Brockman is facing charges of two counts statutory sex offense with a child and two counts indecent liberties with a child.

Prosecutors say the phone of the lawmaker had 14 videos of illegal activities. Brockman was arrested Oct. 8.

Brockman, in a resignation letter to the House clerk, said in part, "Due to the seriousness of these accusations, I need to focus on my defense of these allegations. As a result, I am unable to fulfill my duty and service to my constituents in Guilford County."

The resignation was effective immediately.

"Rep. Brockman's decision to resign is the right thing to do for his constituents and for the North Carolina House of Representatives," said Speaker Destin Hall, R-Caldwell. "His departure spares the House from a difficult expulsion process and brings closure to this troubling chapter."

Hall less than three hours earlier had released the names of a 12-member committee given the charge to investigate accusations of misconduct by Brockman. The panel could have decided on expulsion from the chamber. At the time of naming the committee, Brockman was formally removed from all House committees.

Brockman represented District 60, or the southwestern corner of Guilford County inclusive of High Point. He was vice chairman in the Committee on Education K-12, and a member of five others – Agriculture and Environment; Appropriations; Appropriations Education; Energy and Public Utilities; and Health. He also is a member of the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee.

"I am glad that Rep. Brockman has voluntarily resigned from the General Assembly," said Rep. Robert Reives, D-Chatham, the chamber's minority leader. "The allegations against him are serious and made it impossible for him to adequately represent his constituents. I look forward to the Guilford County Democrats appointing his successor."

Brockman is due in court on Thursday of next week. His lawyer was expected on Monday to seek a reduction in the more than $1 million bond.

LONDON (Reuters) -Tesla's sales plunged in October in a number of European countries including Spain, the Netherlands and Nordic markets in the latest sign that the U.S. electric vehicle maker's struggles on the continent continue.

Tesla had seen sales rise in a number of European markets in September, after falling for most of this year due to increasing competition to its ageing lineup from newer EV models.

The automaker's new car registrations - a proxy for sales - dropped 89% in Sweden, 86% in Denmark, 50% in Norway and 48% in the Netherlands, local industry data showed. Its sales in Spain were down 31% in October, while industry-wide sales of fully-electric and plug-in hybrid models jumped 119%.

In France, however, Tesla posted a small gain in sales for a second consecutive month.

The drop in Norway came after several months of growth in a market where almost all new cars sold were EVs and Tesla has remained the country's largest automaker.

Tesla's sales have fallen in Europe this year because it has a small, ageing lineup of models at a time when legacy manufacturers and Chinese rivals are releasing new EV models at a rapid clip. Through September Tesla's sales were down 28.5% in Europe versus the first nine months of 2024.

The company has also faced a backlash from some European consumers against CEO Elon Musk, who helped bankroll Donald Trump's U.S. presidential election victory last year and has championed European far-right parties.

"Car buyers have more choice than ever, with an influx of new EVs from established manufacturers and ambitious newcomers from China," said Ginny Buckley, CEO of electric-car buying and advice site Electrifying.com.

"Tesla no longer has the market to itself and that seems to be showing in its sales figures in Europe."

In Denmark, Tesla was outsold by several Chinese EV brands, including BYD, Xpeng and Geely's Zeekr. In Spain, its October sales of 393 cars were dwarfed by those of SAIC's MG brand (3,725 cars) BYD (2,806 cars) and Chery's Omoda and Jaecoo brands - which sold 1,433 and 974 cars respectively.

Tesla sold just 133 vehicles in Sweden, lagging not just mainstream brands but also luxury German automaker Porsche, which sold 172 cars. Through October, Tesla's sales in Sweden are down 67% versus the same period last year.

Ciara Cook, research manager at research firm New AutoMotive said registrations for mainstream brands such as Fiat, Volvo, Suzuki and Mazda were down 15 to 18% in the year through to September in the European Union "as they work to update their vehicle offerings to match consumer demand".

But Tesla's sales in the EU were down nearly 39% during the same period.

"The Musk factor looks like it is contributing the difference," Cook said.

Lawyer says Halloween terrorist plot FBI Director Kash Patel described 'never' existed

DETROIT — A Michigan lawyer criticized FBI Director Kash Patel's claims that his client and four other young suspects had plotted to carry out a terrorist attack over Halloween weekend, saying they are merely video gamers who engaged in tough talk online and recreational gun activities.

"These kids are gamers, gamers are weird in the way they talk to each other," attorney Amir Makled told the Detroit Free Press, part of the USA TODAY Network, following a jail visit with his 20-year-old client on Nov. 1.

The attorney's comments come after Patel announced in a post on X that the FBI arrested multiple people for "allegedly plotting a violent attack." The bureau chief did not describe the alleged plan, nor did he say how many people were arrested or detail the charges they face.

Makled said his client is one of five suspects who were arrested in separate FBI raids on Halloween. He said the all-male group ranged in age from 16 to 20, and all were born in the United States.

Makled maintains that the case is about protected free speech — friends talking tough on the internet — and that there was no plan to harm anyone.

"There is nothing here. There was never any plot," said Makled, who spoke by phone to the Free Press, as he was preparing to visit his 20-year-old client in jail. "What they did was jump the gun, and by that, I mean Patel."

None of the suspects has been charged. In federal cases, the government typically has 48 hours to charge someone before letting them leave.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Attorney's Office and Jordan Hall, spokesperson for the FBI Detroit field office, declined to comment on Nov. 1.

Attorney: Suspects scrutinized for recreational gun activity, online searches

The FBI said agents searched two homes in the Detroit suburb of Dearborn and a storage facility in the suburb of Inkster with the help of local law enforcement. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer previously said she was briefed by the FBI on the operation but did not offer additional information.

According to Makled, the five suspects landed on the FBI's radar over their recreational gun activity. The FBI was concerned about this activity, he said, and so the agency investigated it.

The suspects' internet activity also came under scrutiny, Makled said, noting the suspects were "going down the rabbit hole of different types of websites."

"It causes the government to pause and look into it, which is fine," Makled said. "That's police work. But don't use broad strokes and try to paint our kids from our community as terrorists because of that."

FBI investigation: Deadly Michigan church attack was motivated by anti-religious beliefs

Attorney's client says 'they got it all wrong'

Makled said his client, who remains jailed without charges, is in good spirits but is scared and "concerned about the political pressure from Washington."

"He says they got it all wrong. ... There's no plan," Makled said of his client. "There was no plot, and there was no imminent threat of a terrorism event in the state of Michigan at all. And I believe him."

He added that his client is also worried about his family and "what could potentially happen." The family is also hoping the U.S. Attorney's Office sees things the same way and recognizes that there's "nothing there," according to Makled.

"They're praying and hoping that nothing comes out of this," Makled said. "They don't believe their son was radicalized or had any part of a terrorist plot."

Hell hath no fury like a wife facing off with her husband's "on a break" one-night-stand who bore his secret child.

Socialite and businesswoman Blythe Hart (Jessica Capshaw) has been navigating a complicated family drama on *9-1-1: Nashville*, after her husband's secret son, Blue (Hunter McVey), started working in the family business as a firefighter alongside his dad, Don (Chris O'Donnell), and half-brother, Ryan (Michael Provost).

Along came with Blue was his mother, Dixie (LeAnn Rimes), who appears to be carrying a torch for Don — and is in desperate need of money as she faces medical issues (and bills).

In a preview clip exclusive to ** from season 1, episode 4, "Bad Case of the Blues," Blythe meets up with a private investigator, Charlie (Jessejames Locorriere), to learn more about what she's facing.

"Dixie Bennings is a threat to your family," Charlie tells her, citing financial reasons Dixie could go after the wealthy Harts ("She's filed bankruptcy twice, she's upside-down on her mortgage"), but "there's always old-fashioned revenge."

Charlie reveals that while there are a few bar fights and public intoxication charges on Dixie's rap sheet, "I'm afraid this isn't going to be as easy as the time I got rid of the zoning commissioner for your father."

Kevin Nealon walked away from *Saturday Night Live* with an Emmy nomination, a record as the longest-tenured cast member, and a serious case of claustrophobia.

Nealon, whose nine-year record on the show has since been surpassed, claims his fear of enclosed spaces dates back to an *SNL *sketch that saw him impersonate late-night host Jay Leno. He detailed the incident to Ted Danson on the latest episode of his *Where Everybody Knows Your Name* podcast, explaining that it all began in the hair and makeup department.

"They needed to make a prosthetic chin for me," Nealon began, explaining that doing so required a plaster mold of his face. "I'd never had it done before, and they cover you with plastic, so it doesn't drip on you. And they cover up your ears, your mouth is closed, straws in the nose, and they start putting plaster all over you, and it starts to harden."

Nealon said he didn't expect to have a problem with the process — but once the plaster was on, his feelings changed.

"It starts to get warm," he recalled. "It's hardening and you're thinking, 'Oh my god, all that's open is my nostrils! If they close those up, I'll suffocate.' And I started to get panicky."

He continued, "I remember I'm about to pass out and I go, 'Take it off, take it off' and then the next thing I know — smelling salts. And I'm waking up."

Danson, who's been in the comedy business for his fair share of years, noted that he's had his own run-in with the plaster life mask. While his experience wasn't "as intense," he could relate to the sudden fear. "It is very scary," the *Cheers* star agreed. "And you think you can do it and it'll be alright but it's terrifying."

Despite passing out, Nealon said he ended up returning to the hair and makeup chair for round two. After all, he wasn't about to give up a shot to parody Jay Leno: "I wanted to get it done," he said simply. "And I almost passed out again."

He eventually made it through the mask process but soon noticed that his relationship to dark, enclosed spaces had changed. Two weeks later, the comedian was in a subway car in New York City when his train halted — and he immediately spiraled.

"I started getting that same feeling again and it snowballed from that," Nealon said. "I started getting it more and more, I became almost agoraphobic. I thought it was over for me."

The actor worried he would be unable to fly out for gigs and even found himself panicking over the thought of being stuck in traffic. But eventually, over the next few years, he worked through the feeling and came out the other side. "It doesn't bother me anymore," he shared.

But just a year after his own plaster pass out, he discovered that actor and two-time *SNL* host Jeff Daniels lived through an even scarier plaster experience.

"Here is the nightmare of all nightmares," Nealon began. "It's a Friday night and the headwriter comes up to me and goes, 'Did you hear what's happening with Jeff Daniels right now? They can't get the plaster mask off his face."

Daniels himself lamented the incident during a 2016 visit to Jimmy Fallon's* Tonight Show*, sharing that what was meant to be a 15-minute process ultimately lasted six hours because someone used the wrong material on his face.

"They used plaster, like you would put — oh, I don't know — on your wall," Daniels joked. The mixture was especially stuck to the hair from his eyebrows, eyelashes and three-day-old stubble, making its removal a long and painful process that involved Lorne Michaels calling in a plastic surgeon pal.

In his own telling of the tale, which he didn't witness firsthand, Nealon pointed out that it was a risky situation: "If [Daniels] panics and throws up, he'll drown, 'cause there's nowhere for it to come out," he said. Luckily, the surgeon was able to come in and slowly remove the plaster — after cutting Daniels's eyebrows, eyelashes, and beard, while administering novocaine to his face.

Nealon said when he ran into "red-faced" Daniels the next day, he pretended that he hadn't already heard the story.

Watch Nealon recount his claustrophobia origin story above.**

"At long last, we can begin."

Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower) arrives in full view in the new *Stranger Things* season 5 trailer, which sees the transmogrified form of Henry Creel (a.k.a. One) come face to face with Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). Levitating an immobilized Will towards him, the living nightmare ominously declares, "You are going to help me...one...last...time."

The fifth and final season picks up in the fall of 1987, which is more than a year after the events of season 4. Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) is back in hiding, training up for Vecna's eventual re-emergence, while dodging the government's hunt for her and the military occupation of Hawkins.

Matt and Ross Duffer, the sibling filmmaking duo and creators of *Stranger Things*, sit down exclusively with ** to break down some of the big reveals from the new trailer.

Will and Vecna face to face

According to Ross, the key to understanding Vecna's line to Will lies in season 2, episode 6, "The Spy," when the Byers boy was brought to Hawkins Laboratory for evaluation. He calls it "the most important episode," teasing, "Will was really working, in a way, for the Mind Flayer."

Now in season 5, Ross adds, "We start to learn more about what happened and what the connection is to all of this and Vecna."

The trailer reaffirms that Will is crucial to the conclusion of this story that began nine years ago when the show premiered on Netflix. "Because the story really began with Will and his disappearance, it felt, in order to go full circle, it needed to really end with him in so many ways," Matt says. "In the last couple seasons, we hadn't really centered much of the show on Will. So there was so much to explore with him from a character perspective and plot perspective."

Joseph Quinn's Eddie Munson won't return in 'Stranger Things' season 5: 'RIP'

*Stranger Things* first introduced Vecna/Henry Creel/One in season 4, while Will was off in California, but the character returned to Hawkins in the finale — a distinction that yielded "really rich territory to explore their connection and relationship," Matt adds.

It's also why the final season begins in the fall of 1987, near the anniversary of Will's disappearance in the Upside Down. "So much of the season was built around the idea of coming full circle, answering many of the questions that were posed all the way back in season 1," Matt continues. "I think the two biggest questions that we didn't really answer in season 1 that we do answer this season is 'what is the Upside Down, truly?' and 'why was Will taken?'"

Vecna is sporting a new look these days. In the years since we last saw him, he apparently has been hitting the Upside Down gym, his body visibly caked with thicker tendrils.

Matt says the team "wanted to reinvent his look a little bit; level him up, so to speak." He also confirms there's "a whole backstory" about why he's been away for as long as he has, which will be unveiled piecemeal throughout the season.

"We wanted him to be scarier," Matt continues. "So much of season 4, he was attacking you within the mind. One of the differences this season is he's also attacking in the real world. Because of that, we needed to take his abilities to a new level."

Story wise, Ross points to how Nancy (Natalia Dyer) burned and shot Vecna before he fell out a window in season 4. "So the idea being more that he has rebuilt his body, which is why there are still literal holes and you can see through pieces of his body," he says. "He's lost what remained of his human body and has become more a part of the Upside Down. If there is any humanity left within him, it's diminished."

Viewers will spot the unconscious (or perhaps dead?) bodies of soldiers littering the pavement around Vecna in the trailer. It's clear humanity's military efforts are woefully unprepared for this monster's might. "We wanted him to feel really undefeatable," Matt explains. "We thought a lot about *Terminator*, *Terminator 2*, specifically, and also the relentless quality of the bad guys in those films."

Ross mentions another cinematic reference for Vecna 2.0: Darth Vader's dramatic arrival in *Rogue One: A Star Wars Story* (2016) — "to really see his powers in full display and how exciting that was," he says. "You certainly see Vecna's full powers on display in this."

"A lot of this season takes place in the Upside Down"

STRANGER THINGS: SEASON 5

The Upside Down on 'Stranger Things 5'.

The military is turning Hawkins upside down — and even entering the Upside Down.

Certain trailer shots showcase Eleven using her telekinetic powers to propel her over a high fence into some kind of army compound, which certainly looks like it's in the Upside Down beneath that alternate dimension's dark sky crackling with red lightning. The Duffers don't want to dig into that too much other than to point out the obvious.

"These gates have opened up. We have a full military present in Hawkins and it's under quarantine," Ross comments. "I will say, of course the military is doing stuff in the Upside Down, but it really is a mystery to our characters and the audience for the beginning of the show."

Matt chimes in: "A lot of the season takes place in the Upside Down. If I have to look at one more visual effects shot, I don't know what I'm gonna do. We will never make anything else with floating anything. Snow, spores, ash, I'm done with all that."

And what about floating islands? Another snippet from the trailer shows someone falling from the sky in the Upside Down as hovering masses of land bob around the clouds. That's another piece the Duffers decline to talk much about. "As you start to discover more about the Upside Down, that's when that imagery comes into play," Ross says.

"We reveal really everything about the Upside Down, all of which was planned out in season 1," Matt adds. "It was fun to finally pull back the curtain on all of that."

Dialing up the powers to Eleven

Like Vecna, Eleven is getting a power boost this season. One of her new tricks is this telekinetic leap of hers. It's like Elizabeth Olsen's Wanda Maximoff in the MCU, but circa *Avengers: Infinity War*.

"It's like she's pushing down at the ground and having that energy propel her up, in a way," Ross describes. "So she's not really flying, but she is boosting herself and getting some serious air."

The duo wanted to "level her up" but in a way that felt "within the realm of possibilities of what we've shown in the past," Matt adds. "We didn't want her flying around like Superman. She's just using those abilities in new ways."

Volume 2 lookahead

Among the shots the Duffers don't want to say much about just yet is that red energy pulse emanating from a giant antenna. "It plays a very important role on the show," Matt comments. "You're not gonna see that in Volume 1, either. It's in Volume 2."

The first four episodes of the final season will be released as Volume 1 on Netflix on Nov. 26, while the next batch of three will release as Volume 2 on Christmas Day. Then on New Year's Eve, the series finale will screen simultaneously in movie theaters and on Netflix.

From the trailers released so far, Matt confirms the footage has mostly been from Vol. 1. However, "There are shots from every single episode, including the finale." This new one in particular "has something from [episodes] 7 and 8. So I think every episode is accounted for," Ross says. "The marketing team actually hasn't seen the finale, but we did send them a couple shots that we thought could work. They're in there, but I'm not gonna tell you which shots."

Being that this is the final season, everyone is wondering who will make it to the finish line. There have been a number of important character deaths on the show thus far, from Barb (Shannon Purser) to Eddie Munson (Joseph Quinn), but the core crew stuck it out. Will that change by finale's end?

"I don't know if we want to say, but certainly the stakes are higher and it's more dangerous than ever before," Ross says. "What it really comes down to for us is stories and the situations."

Nancy features in one dramatic shot from the trailer, in which she's crying while rinsing blood off her hands in a bathroom sink. "How do you know that's blood on her hands and not paint?" Matt jokes. "Maybe she's just upset 'cause she got splattered with paint. Who knows?"

Ross does concede, however, "It's a brutal season, I will say that."

"Yeah, it's very brutal," Matt continues. "It's violent. The stakes are higher than ever. Because you're hurtling through the end, a lot more is on the table, I will say. Hopefully it's surprising and earned, what's happened. We weren't going for shock value."

The Duffers don't take death lightly. Exploring the death of a main character often felt "so heavy," Matt admits. "It feels like it completely changes what the show is. So we're just very careful about when we do it and who dies."

For example, the loss of Eddie, who died from Demobats in the season 4 finale, "affects the entirety of season 5," Matt notes. "There is no season 6, so we need to make sure, if and when there are deaths, that it makes sense in terms of where we want our characters to end up at the end of the show. That was a lot of the discussion this year."

STRANGER THINGS: SEASON 5. (L to R) Caleb McLaughlin as Lucas Sinclair and Sadie Sink as Max Mayfield in Stranger Things: Season 5

Max's fate is still a big mystery on *Stranger Things*. She technically died back in season 4, but she managed to bring herself back at least to coma status. She's been in this unconscious state ever since and fans are eagerly awaiting that reveal.

The Duffers already worked out the answer back in season 4, Ross confirms. "We hadn't fully figured out the plot of 5 at that point, so we didn't know exactly how it was gonna factor in," he says. "But, yeah, it's been planned for a while."

Is her fate tied directly to Vecna's larger plans for Hawkins? "Could be," Matt replies, playing coy once again.

Linda Hamilton as Dr. Kay in STRANGER THINGS, season 5

There are many *Terminator* references on *Stranger Things* this year. Even Nancy's hair this season, Matt points out, "is based on Linda's hair from *Terminator 1*." But there's no more overt nod than the arrival of Sarah Connor herself.

In the absence of Dr. Martin Brenner (Matthew Modine), who died at the end of season 4, the Duffers needed a replacement. Enter Linda Hamilton's Dr. Kay, who's leading the government's investigation into the Upside Down and the strange occurrences in Hawkins.

***Get your daily dose of entertainment news, celebrity updates, and what to watch with our EW Dispatch newsletter.***

"Usually when we're casting these new roles, we're working with our casting director to come up with the actor before we write the roles," Ross says. "When Carmen Cuba, our casting director, suggested Linda, we got really excited because she's very, very different from Modine. She's equally intimidating and intelligent, but she can fight. If it comes down to it, she can shoot a gun, she can get in a fist fight, she can kick your ass."

Matt clarifies Hamilton isn't channeling Sarah Connor, noting an "unhinged quality" she brings to Dr. Kay. "Part of the reason she's scary," he adds, "is that she, unlike Dr. Brenner, has no emotional connection to Eleven. There was that paternal quality that Brenner had. Dr. Kay has none of those feelings. She really views her just as a weapon that needs to be acquired."**

President Donald Trump's administration faces deadlines on Monday to tell two federal judges whether it will comply with court orders to resume funding benefits through SNAP, the nation's biggest food aid program, using contingency funds during the government shutdown, which is now in its 34th day.

Trump, meanwhile, says he 'won't be extorted' by Democrats, signaling no end soon. During a "60 Minutes" interview that aired on Sunday, Trump said he would only negotiate on extending the Affordable Care Act subsidies once the government is reopened. At that point, the slim Republican majorities in Congress will enable them to continue ignoring Democratic input.

The shortage of air traffic controllers amid the shutdown continues to lead to delayed flights into and out of the United States. U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy has been warning that travelers will start to see more flight disruptions the longer controllers go without a paycheck.

The shutdown is triggering a wave of closures of Head Start centers where students — who come from low-income households, are homeless or are in foster care — will miss out on preschool, where they are fed two meals a day and receive therapy vital to their development. Some centers say they'll close indefinitely, while others are staying afloat with emergency funding.

The Latest:

Trump predicts Democrats will capitulate to Republicans

"I think they have to," Trump said during the "60 Minutes" interview. "And if they don't vote, it's their problem."

With Senate Democrats now voting 13 times against reopening the government, insisting they need Trump and Republicans to negotiate with them first, Trump said Republican leaders should change Senate rules and scrap the filibuster.

"Republicans have to get tougher," Trump told CBS. "If we end the filibuster, we can do exactly what we want."

Senate Republicans have repeatedly rejected that idea, arguing that requiring 60 votes to overcome any objections is vital to the Senate, and has allowed them to stop Democratic policies when they're in the minority.

HANOI, Vietnam (AP) — Rescuers and aid workers in central Vietnam raced to reach isolated area that were battered by floods and landslides, killing at least 37 people, as another typhoon was on track to make landfall later this week, officials said Monday.

Days of record rain that began in late October triggered flash floods and landslides that inundated villages, swept away homes and displaced tens of thousands.

Many neighborhoods remained without power or cut off from data networks, including in Danang. Canals, riverbanks and coastlines were also eroded, and several national highways were still blocked.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Kalmaegi is forecast to rapidly strengthen as it heads toward Vietnam's central coast, with winds potentially reaching up to 166 kph (103 mph) when it enters the South China Sea on Wednesday, after crossing the Philippines, according to Vietnam's National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting.

Rescuers reached many stranded residents late last week as floodwaters briefly receded, but by Monday morning rivers were rising again. The Huong and Bo rivers in Hue City reached dangerous levels, and officials warned that heavy rain is expected to continue across the region, state media said.

State media said authorities sent food, clean water, medicine and shelter while helping families rebuild damaged homes. Teams worked to clean debris, restore power, water and transport links and prevent disease outbreaks. The government was also repairing irrigation systems and supporting farmers to restart crop and livestock production as floodwaters recede.

The death toll from the most recent floods and landslides rose to 37 on Monday, with five people missing and 78 injured, officials said.

Vietnam has been pummeled by a relentless series of storms this year, leaving little time to recover between disasters. Typhoon Ragasa dumped torrential rain in late September, then Typhoon Bualoi slammed the central coast and Typhoon Matmo resulted in flooding in the north.

Together, the three storms had left more than 85 people dead or missing in two weeks, and caused an estimated $1.36 billion in damage.

Vietnam is among the world's most flood-prone countries, with nearly half its population living in high-risk areas. Scientists warn that a warming climate is intensifying storms and rainfall across Southeast Asia, making floods like this year's increasingly destructive and frequent.
